NURSES Tour with The Mountain Goats

Following a New Year's Eve show at Mississippi Studios in their hometown of Portland, OR Nurses will head for warmer pastures touring with The Mountain Goats at shows throughout the Southern United States. Check out the full dates below.
When Nurses were in New York City this fall, they filmed a session with Hooves on the Turf, who captured stunning stripped down renditions of "New Feelings" and "Trying to Reach You." The essence of the band's unique approach to songcraft really shines in this clip. Also, make sure to watch the dynamite video of A$AP Rocky freestyling over the sampled beat from Nurses' "You Lookin' Twice" in Pitchfork's most recent episode of their Selector series.

John K. Samson, singer-songwriter for critically lauded indie rock band The Weakerthans, will release his first full length solo album, Provincial, this January 24th via Epitaph Records. The record contains newly recorded versions of songs from Samson’s previous two acclaimed EPs, “City Route 85” and “Provincial Road 222,” alongside a collection of beautifully evocative new tracks. Provincial is now available for pre-order at the Epitaph Store.

Provincial travels four routes woven into the prairie landscape of Manitoba, the Canadian province where Samson lives. It finds familiar landmarks and forgotten ones; it mines the precise and particular. For a video glimpse of Provincial’s prairie roadmap, go to:

“Heart of the Continent,” describes the sense of loss and despair that haunts the former site of a Winnipeg landmark, set against a backdrop of lilting country folk. The melodic rocker “When I Write My Master’s Thesis,” details a young academic’s struggle to hold his life together as he tries to complete his research of a forgotten institution in tiny Ninette, Manitoba, while "" is a song in the form of an online petition to honor the valiant hockey player Reggie “The Riverton Rifle” Leach.
They are hymns for the departed and rockers for the living, songs about dying villages, Icelandic longing, snowplows, broken glass, satellites, hockey skates, and staff room romances. In creating these sonic portraits, Samson talked to relatives, friends and strangers; he visited archives, a tuberculosis sanatorium turned RV Park and a forgotten cemetery. The resulting album contains 12 fierce, tuneful, vivid stories united by a deep sense of place.
The Weakerthans were born out of the Winnipeg-punk-scene. The group’s breakthrough album Reconstruction Site and its celebrated follow up Reunion Tour deftly merged a melodic punk with Bob Dylan-Ray Davies lyrical insights, earning a wider fan base and establishing Samson as a songwriter of immense talent. Paste Magazine wrote of Reunion Tour, “If such a prize existed, it would be the leading candidate for this year’s Punk Pulitzer.”

Okkervil River Release 'Golden Opportunities 2' For Free

At the end of the year in 2007, Okkervil River released Golden Opportunities Mixtape, a free EP intended as a gift to fans. Called a “Must Have Download” by Rolling Stone, the songs were recorded on the road throughout Europe and America during extensive touring for their album The Stage Names. This year, the band continues that tradition in the sequel release Golden Opportunities 2, which both hearkens back to the original release and varies the formula.
Like its predecessor, Golden Opportunities 2 is a series of conceptually-related covers, this time by lesser-known musicians’ musicians such as Motown session player Ted Lucas, the 1980’s Australian band the Triffids, and the mysterious L.A. singer-songwriter Jim Sullivan, who vanished in the New Mexico desert in 1975. In contrast to the intricate arrangements and detailed production of this year’s full-length Okkervil release I Am Very Far, which Pitchfork called “a lyrically and musically feisty album” and about which Filter said “…rich, layered arrangements make I Am Very Far both fascinating and memorable,” Golden Opportunities was recorded entirely live to two-track tape in one day at the Austin studio Premium Recording. The resulting EP showcases a band that has developed both a tight responsiveness and a loose-limbed casualness after a year spent on the road. A hazy mystery hangs over these songs, which are evocative on their own but, when collected together, add up to something greater and stranger than the sum of their parts.
As with the first Golden Opportunities, this new release is available for free on the Okkervil River website. It can be downloaded in both MP3 and lossless formats.

Carlo Meriano releases latest album “Sticka Ikebana” on December 4, 2011.

Carlo Meriano wants to tell you a story. It won't have a beginning or an end, and it might be different the next time you hear it, and it might be about temporal paradoxes or about being a truck driver, but it will always be honest. A stranger to music theory, Carlo has been writing songs since childhood as a way to express and make sense of his experiences and emotions, and also because he can't remember the lyrics to other artist's songs.
With influences that include Elliott Smith, Johnny Cash, The Magnetic Fields and the creator of the original Twilight Zone television series, Carlo presents a truly unique sound with lyrics that range from collapse and redemption, happiness and fear to the absurd. These songs, written from 2006 to 2010, were born of out of Carlo's own life, informed by two years of self destruction followed by two years of rebuilding in his life and his music. Musically, this renewal was clear when Carlo released the Toys are Just EP in 2008, featuring songs written and performed chiefly on a ukulele and a toy electronic guitar purchased at Value Village for $4.99. Based on the strength of that EP and Carlo's often frenetic live shows, he toured the East Coast and was invited to open Andrew WK's Halifax show.
Following the success of this tour and shows across Ontario, Carlo started writing in earnest; revisiting the music he'd written both before and after his most destructive period and recorded a full length album with Dave Plowman, featuring support from several Toronto musicians.

On December 4, 2011 at the Painted Lady in Toronto, Carlo will release Sticka Ikebana, a nine track journey through a diverse landscape that is unified by Carlo's soulful vocals and jaunty melodies. Layered with guitar, ukulele, lap steel, violin, banjo and even the glockenspiel, Sticka Ikebana has a strong folk heart with country, rock and pop influences.

Carlo Meriano wants to tell you a story. Are you listening?

Build Us Airplanes - New LP Available from Sell The Heart

Sell The Heart (Santa Rosa, CA) are excited to announce the release of the new album from Build Us Airplanes. At The End Of The Day is the sophomore album from the Bay Area indie rock band.
The vinyl is limited to 500 on three different colorways (100 Purple w/ Orange/Blue Splatter, 150 Purple, 250 Black) and can be ordered directly from Sell The Heart. The album is available digitally as well. You can download At The End of The Day for $6 at Build Us Airplanes' Bandcamp. You can also download via iTunes.
From the dusty roads of Vacaville, CA Build Us Airplanes brings a familiar, yet fresh approach to indie rock. The quartet is made up of hardworking punk/indie kids who decided they wanted a bit more melody to go along with their angst. Since there inception in early 2008 the band has already cranked out several solid releases. With their latest album, At The End of The Day, Build Us Airplanes have found the sweet spot between indie and punk. The band spins melodic indie rock with punk rock swagger leaving the pretension firmly checked at the door. Top notch songwriting and catchy lyrics blend with an edge that has been honed from years of playing together. Residing somewhere between Archers of Loaf, Cursive, Jawbreaker and Hot Water Music, Build Us Airplanes has carved out their own unique niche.

O PIoneers!!! Announce Final Tour (Nov 26 - Dec 07)

Long-running rockers O Pioneers!!! have announced their imminent demise. In a statement issued late last night from his fortified printing compound outside Houston, Pioneers’ fearless leader Eric Solomon expounded on the death of the dream:
O Pioneers!!! was a band that should have ended a long time ago. I started this band in the fall of 2004, and it's slowly changed and migrated into what it is today, based off of the millions of people that have been in this band. I got tired of trying to con people into playing songs that they liked, or may have been a fan of, but ultimately they didn't have a connection with, besides something that was at face value. This was my first band, and I'd like to remember it as such. I'm super excited and proud of everything I've been able to do with this band, and even more excited and honored by the people I've met playing in this band. But I feel that at this time it's better to try and start over, instead of trying to force something that I feel has been over for a little while now. The future of music in my life is really exciting right now, and I couldn't be happier with how OP!!! is ending, and for what projects we’ll be starting next year. Big thanks to a million people, but especially everyone who has been in this band at one point (all 30,000 of you), and all close friends and family (you know who you are).
O Pioneers!!! will celebrate this momentous occasion with a short farewell tour beginning next week. They will be joined on all dates by labelmates and old friends New Bruises, with the tour taking both bands throughout the East Coast for shows alongside Latterman, Iron Chic, Tigers Jaw and many more. Dates are listed below.
In honor of a lifespan rivaled only by their incessant release schedule, O Pioneers!!! have unleashed their complete discography as a digital pay-what-you-want download via Juicebox Recording Co. This discography includes all of the 7”s, EP’s, splits and full-lengths, as well as various demos, live recordings and unreleased songs. The only songs not included are the three songs that are on the Andrew Jackson Jihad split 9” released earlier this year on No Idea Records.

Rejectioneers – Release Debut EP For Free Download

Columbia, SC indie band Rejectioneers have digitally released their debut EP, 25, for free download on Bandcamp.

Listen to "When It's Over" (mp3) from 25.

Boasting former members from several prominent SC bands, Rejectioneers offer a mature take on tuneful indie rock. Originally formed in 2007 the band took proper shape in 2009 and spent 2010 practicing and recording. The band emerged to start playing shows again in 2011 and 25 marks Rejectioneers’ highly anticipated debut release. Meticulously recorded in pieces over the course of two years in guitarist Kenny McWilliams’ Archer Avenue studio, 25 blends power pop, 90’s alt rock and indie rock into one polished sound. Rejectioneers’ songs are instantly memorable and affecting. Recalling the beautiful pop simplicity of Nada Surf and The Weakerthans against the rock backbone of Jimmy Eat World and Foo Fighters, Rejectioneers’ impact is nothing short of immediate. With the tasteful crooning of Ben Walker out in front of the band’s refined arrangements, the melodies and emotion shine bright.

Rejectioneers are in the process of writing their debut full-length this Winter. More news to come!

Rarely do you come across a young band that startles you with such inherent quality. While Cleveland, Ohio’s Signals Midwest might be rooted in the ethos of punk rock the band quickly transcends the tag both musically and lyrically on their sophomore album, Latitudes And Longitudes. Paying tribute to the continual growth of legends like Small Brown Bike and Fairweather while echoing modern bands such as Balance And Composure and The Menzingers, Signals Midwest provide a unique perspective that resides firmly outside the punk-by-the-numbers formula. Call if post-pop/punk if you will.

Listen to "Limnology" from Latitudes And Longitudes

Signals Midwest formed in late 2008 as a trio and issued their first full-length album in 2009. In 2010 the band expanded to a quartet with the addition of a second guitar player. That would be a pivotal move in the band’s collaborative development. Experimenting with and expanding their sound, Signals Midwest quickly outgrew the standard pop/punk pace. With 2011’s Latitudes And Longitudes there is a fleshed out maturity that shines through. Recorded mostly live, the album bristles with the kind of energy and purpose that emanates from a band confidently growing comfortable in their own skin.

Acclaimed modernist pop band Islands will release their new album A Sleep & A Forgetting this February 14th via Anti-Records. While the record continues the band’s penchant for crafting adventuresome and infectious state of the art pop music, this time band leader Nick Thorburn has infused the songs with a personal introspection that gives the record a new and powerful emotional resonance.
“This album is far more personal than any I’ve made before,” Thorburn explains. “I left New York after the end of a relationship and came to Los Angeles. There was a piano where I was staying and that’s where I wrote these songs. This record deals with loss, with memory and forgetting and with dreaming. I started writing it on Valentines day and its coming out on Valentine’s Day.”
A Sleep & A Forgetting is the anticipated follow up to Islands critically heralded record Vapours, which Black Book described as "infectious and weird....masterful” and Popmatters proclaimed “a damn fine record.” The new album was produced by Thorburn and fellow Islands member Evan Gordon in less than two weeks, the 11 songs recorded live with hardly a single overdub. It’s a stripped down process and beautifully understated sound which only reinforces the confessional content of the lyrics.
The new album offers all the shimmering sonic textures and irresistible melodies that have come to define Islands enduring appeal, but there is a deeply personal cathartic undercurrent to the songs. “The sound is really my interpretation of soul music,” Thorburn offers.
“I mean, I’m a white kid from Canada so it’s gonna be very warped. But that’s where my head was at, that particular way of dealing with themes of pain and heartbreak.”
