The 44th Edition of the Festival d'été de Québec: A Musical Planet!

For the 44th consecutive year, the capital will be grooving to the beat of the Festival d’été de Québec this July. The two Festival weekends already promise to be hot, and the news that Elton John and Metallica are playing the Festival is making waves across Canada and the U.S. and even as far away as Sweden.
“We aimed to stand out, to be major players on the big events scene, to attract top names and to promote Quebec City. We did it and we’re proud,” said Nancy Savard, chair of the board for the Festival d’été de Québec. “A lot of Quebeckers now plan their vacation around the Festival and more and more people from outside Québec watch for our program and want to come.”
With the names that are added or confirmed today, the Festival promises once again to be a huge success!

THE OPENING EVENING
Is this becoming a tradition? Again this year, the Festival d’été de Québec will open in song and in French. Stars from Québec and France will join in tribute to the best-loved songs of generations of fans. This year, multi-talented Gregory Charles will co-host the show with French TV celebrity Daniela Lumbroso. The names of the artists lined up for this event will be released in May, but we can already confirm the presence of Francis Cabrel. Recorded for television and broadcast primetime in Québec on Télé-Québec, in France on the general interest channel France 3 and in 200 countries on TV5 Monde, this event is a priceless showcase for Québec.
“If the Festival d’été de Québec is known worldwide for its international stars, it is also hugely popular throughout the French-speaking world. No one has ever before produced a variety show as big as this, and with as many francophone artists, for television,” explained Daniel Gélinas, general manager of the Festival d’été de Québec. “Last year’s show was seen by over three million viewers. This show is great publicity for Québec as a whole.”
PLAINS OF ABRAHAM — BELL STAGE
Rock on… is the expression making the rounds on social media about the programming for the Festival’s main stage.
On July 8, Ben Harper kicks off. Known for his happy blend of folk, blues, gospel, funk and reggae, the American guitarist and singer-songwriter has moved more toward rock in recent years. A new album, with two tracks produced with Ringo Starr, is coming out in May.
Sir Elton John, as was announced, will play on July 9 in a concert that promises to make history! Accompanied by his five musicians, the British superstar will perform his greatest hits as well as songs from his latest album, The Union, composed with Leon Russell.
The Black Keys, with Girl Talk and Cage the Elephant opening, will take over the stage on Sunday, July 10 for an evening of rock, electro and blues. The American duo won three Grammy Awards this year, including Best Alternative Music Album for Brothers, and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for Tighten Up.
Simple Plan, who had the crowds on their feet on the Plains in 2005, are back on July 11. A fourth CD should be released in the next few weeks. An excerpt, recorded in duet with Rivers Cuomo, the singer for Weezer, is already out and the band has plans for a French song with Marie-Mai. Opening for Simple Plan will be Dropkick Murphys from Boston, whose sound shows influences from traditional musique irlandaise, punk hardcore, oi! and folk rock.
Marie-Mai, Québec’s rising star, who has already a few record CD sales and several trophies to her name, will play on July 12. Sparkling, dynamic and bursting with energy, the young singer has got a supershow planned, with guest artists, special numbers and dancers. Her fans are going to love it! François Duchesne, Philémon chante, Agnès Beauregard and Midnight Romeo, all from the Pro program at Ampli de Québec, a training and production space for young musicians, will be opening the show.
Québec will rock wall to wall on July 13 with Jonas & The Massive Attraction, Michel Pagliaro and Éric Lapointe, who hasn’t played the Festival since 2006, to top off the evening! These three rockers will be taking the Plains by storm with their own shows plus a few numbers together with Lapointe.
Jean-Pierre Ferland is coming out of retirement for just three performances, including the Festival d’été de Québec on Friday, July 15. For the first part of the show, directed by Denis Bouchard, with scenery, chorists and guests, the “petit roi” will sing songs from Jaune, the legendary album that had such an impact 40 years ago in Québec. And for his and everyone’s pleasure, Ferland will wrap up the evening with his greatest hits. The perfect choice to warm up the crowd— Les Charbonniers de l’enfer.
July 16, it’s a dream come true for many, with Metallica coming to the Plains. Quebec fans have always been crazy about Metallica, and they won’t be disappointed because the American metal band will be playing their greatest hits. Celebrated guitarist Joe Satriani and Quebec City’s own Dance Laury Dance will be opening the show.
Finally for a rocking finale to these 11 days, none other than John Fogerty, on July 17. First known as the leader of the rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), he is also a long-time-singer, songwriter and solo guitarist.
As programming director Dominique Goulet said, “With this program, a succession of legendary rock stars, socially active artists, new talent, and other lesser-known but always interesting performers share the same stage, not to mention the international names that will put Québec on the list of the world’s top festivals.”

PARC DE LA FRANCOPHONIE — MOLSON DRY STAGE
Two favourites are back at the Parc de la Francophonie this year: Death From Above 1979 and Champion et ses G-Strings. The two musicians in the Canadian band, Death From Above 1979, who split up in 2006, have gotten back together for just a few shows. They played at Coachella in California two weeks ago and will be in Quebec City to close the Molson Dry stage on July 17, with the Québec band, Malajube, up first. As for Champion, who says he’s no longer sick, he promises as great a show as ever! He’ll be playing July 13, after Gatineau and Random Recipe, two Québec hip-hop and indie-rock bands open the evening.
“We are privileged, ” remarked Dominique Goulet, “because these artists, who will only be putting on a few shows this summer, wanted to come to the Festival d’été de Québec.”
There will be something for everyone during these 11 days of music: some good hard rock to start, with Bleeker Ridge, 10 Years and Hollywood Undead and Jimmy Hunt and Galaxie later in the week; poetry in many forms, first with the French slammer Grand Corps Malade and Douze Hommes Rapaillés, a moving tribute to Gaston Miron featuring 11 Québec singers. Habana Café will sweep us away with its Latin beat, and an entire evening is dedicated to the blues with Oli Brown, Matt Schofield and the phenomenal Buddy Guy. There’s also a hip-hop night with Manu Militari and Booba, who the rappers Alaclair Ensemble will open for.
Country fans will have a warm welcome for Patrick Norman, who will be preceded on stage by Lisa Leblanc, the winner of the Festival international de la chanson de Granby 2010. And finally, British singer and actress, Marianne Faithfull, is sure to charm spectators with this, her first appearance at the Festival.

PLACE D’YOUVILLE — LOTO-QUÉBEC STAGE AT PLACE METRO
This lively and colorful stage has the well-earned reputation for getting people up and dancing to world beat at its best!
Watch for Hollywood film star Tim Robbins, who won an Oscar and two Golden Globes for his roles in The Player and Mystic River and who now sings folk music with The Rogues Gallery Band and for rock’a’billy queen Wanda Jackson, whose latest album was produced by Jack White, formerly of the White Stripes.
The American bands The Klezmatics and Grupo Fantasma, both Grammy winners in recent years, will pull in the crowds, as will Omar Souleyman, a musical legend from Syria who gives traditional music a pop sound, and everyone loves Afrocubism and its Latin-American version of African beat.
Thomas Fersen will be closing the stage on the last evening, preceded by Ours, whose father’s last name is Souchon…a talent to discover.

In detail:
- From South Africa: Freshlyground
- From Australia: Blue King Brown, Kim Churchill
- From Cameroon: Manu Dibango
- From Colombia: Folklore Urbano Orchestra
- From Congo: Baloji
- From Cuba: Afrocubism
- From the United States: Red Baraat, The Campbell Brothers, The Klezmatics, Wanda Jackson, Tim Robbins & The Rogues Gallery Band, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Blitz The Ambassador (Ghana), Jamie McLean Band, Grupo Fantasma
- From France: Gaëtan Roussel, Ours, Madjo, Thomas Fersen
- From Guinea: Les Espoirs de Coronthie
- From Mali: Afrocubism
- From Mexico: Mexican Institute of Sound, Nortec Collective
- From Niger: Bombino
- From Nigéria: Aşa
- From Peru: Novalima
- From Québec: Elage Diouf (Sénégal), I.No, Afrodizz, Isabeau et les Chercheurs d’or, Marco Calliari, Karim Ouellet
- From Sudan: Emmanuel Jal
- From Syria: Omar Souleyman
“When you add up all the Québec artists who will be playing on the Festival’s three outdoor stages, I think you can say without question that Québec’s biggest artists will be at the Festival one way or another this summer,” general manger Daniel Gélinas said in closing. “We have always aimed at creating events. Some years it’s possible, others not, and when we can do it in French like this year with the opening show, the tribute to Gaston Miron, and Ferland, we can say mission accomplished.”

INDOOR SHOWS presented by Groupe Voyages Québec
There will be more great indoor shows again this year at the Cercle, the Impérial de Québec and the Largo Resto-Club. To date, a few names have been confirmed for the Impérial, including Duchess Says, An Horse, Who Are You, Cut Copy, Emilie Clepper, The Low Anthem, Annihilator, Sword, Mark Bérubé and The Patriotic Few, Dawes, M. SWTHRT – Release Debut Album For Free Download

Southport, NC indie duo SWTHRT have released their debut album, Compact Disc, for free download on Bandcamp. RCRD LBL calls it a "raw, DIY take on new wave".
Rising from the indie/punk of his full-time band, Museum Mouth, Karl Kuehn creates something a bit different with SWTHRT. What started out as a senior graduation project for keyboardist Becca High, turned into a real band after only a few days of writing/recording between the two friends. With that, the new wave/shoegaze pop of SWTHRT was officially born. Echoing influences like New Order, The Cure and late period Joy Division, SWTHRT carries on the DIY/punk aesthetic of Museum Mouth while pushing the new wave tendencies to the foreground.
The first single "Boys With Problems" includes a B-side, an acoustic version of the album track, "I Hate This". Additionally, you can sample the second single, "I Am In Misery", on RCRD LBL.
The band lovingly put together a making of the album video for Compact Disc that can be viewed here. Also, the band's first recording, a cover of Beat Happening's "Indian Summer", can be downloaded on Bandcamp as well.
Recorded in the mountains of North Carolina, Compact Disc simmers with youthful frustration. There is a real dichotomy with Kuehn's deep vocals resonating over the instantly affecting guitar and keyboard driven hooks of the band. The airy instrumental swells carry you far away while the duo's restless lyrical stylings slowly bring you back down to earth. With both Kuehn and High in transitional phases of their lives, Compact Disc serves as a cathartic project for them both. It also serves as quite the magical beginning for SWTHRT.

Jim Mc Turnan and the Kids That Killed the Man give debut album away! Album drops next week, get it for free this week!

For much of the 2000's Jim McTurnan was co-frontman of the fuzzed-out rock quartet Cat-A-Tac, a band which churned out, "...blissful pop songs that wear a snarl..." according to KEXP, and were championed by Under The Radar magazine as, "...My Bloody Valentine with a few licks of Pete Townshend..."
After Cat-A-Tac fizzled in 2008, McTurnan found himself embracing sunnier, more optimistic sounds. Pre-1964 rock-n-roll inspired much of the song structure and mood which found its way onto Joie De Vivre, McTurnan's 2011 full-length debut. However, the new record is not a retro affair. It's infused with a punk demeanor, and borrows from both garage rock and slacker rock, while remaining at its core, a pop album.
McTurnan assembled his new band, The Kids That Killed The Man, in 2009 with an all-star cast of Denver musicians. Bassist Josh Wambeke is also the singer-guitarist of the space rock outfit Fell, which long resided on the roster of the late Australian psych rock label, Camera Obscura. Drummer John Fate grew up touring in the hardcore scene before landing in Denver and joining an indie pop band. Guitarist Nathan Brasil was John Fate's bandmate in the aforementioned indie pop band and initially joined the Kids as a full-time tambourine player before moving onto guitar.
Jim McTurnan & The Kids That Killed The Man played their first batch of shows in 2009. That first batch included Monolith Festival at Red Rocks alongside the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix, the Walkmen, and others, as well as CMJ Music Marathon, the main stage at the Denver Post Underground Showcase, and local support for Art Brut and Surfer Blood. 2010 found the band in Josh's basement recording Joie De Vivre and playing more shows. 2011 brings the release of Joie De Vivre and the hope that you, the media gatekeeper and reader of this bio, might like it.

Joie De Vivre is available to all as a free download for a limited time at jimmcturnan.com and jimmcturnan.bandcamp.com.
The album will be released April 26th!

Matthew Barber goes it alone with stunning results on sixth long-player.

Matthew Barber's new, self-titled album is a collection of self-produced songs resulting from a winter's worth of work in his ramshackle basement home studio. Matthew Barber sees the Toronto-based singer-songwriter returning to his roots by playing all of the instruments as well as handling the the recording and mixing duties. The album will be available digitally on May 31st from iTunes Canada with a physical release to follow on June 7th. Matthew will be touring Canada in support of the album (confirmed dates below).

Download one of the album's stand-out tracks "Ring Upon Your Finger" here.

Matthew Barber’s passion for the throwback sounds of the late 60’s and early 70’s is again clearly evident on this record, which was captured entirely on an analog 8-track machine. “I read Keith Richards’ autobiography as I was beginning the recording process and I was excited by his statement that 8-track was his preferred format for recording,” says Barber. “It forces you to make choices as you go along and keep the arrangements lean, which suited the sort of record I wanted to make. I also got an iPhone around that time and the only album I had on it for months was Beggar’s Banquet, which became a reference point sonically.”
Astute listeners will surely notice nods to 20th century masters like The Beatles, The Stones, Dylan, The Band and Paul Simon – but the voice at the heart of each song – both as songwriter and singer – is singularly Matthew Barber. “The heart of the record is about being in a long-term relationship, trying to make sense of all that goes along with your life becoming more deeply entwined with that of another person and how that influences both your outlook on the world and your understanding of yourself.”

Matthew Barber Tour Dates with Oh Susanna
June 6 - Winnipeg @ The Park Theatre
June 7 - Saskatoon @ Amigos
June 8 - Edmonton @ The Pawn Shop
June 9 - Calgary @ The Palamino
June 11 - Vancouver @ The Biltmore Cabaret
June 20 - Halifax @ The Carleton
June 24 - Toronto @ The Great Hall

Finally in Québec City: Metallica

The fans are going to love it! The legendary band Metallica will be playing at this 44th edition of the Festival d’été de Québec, with the long-awaited performance set for Saturday, July 16 on the Bell Stage on the Plains of Abraham.
“This is a feat we’ve been dreaming of,” Dominique Goulet, Programming Director for the Festival d’été de Québec, proudly announced. “This has got to be the band that we get the most requests for! For years, Festival fans have been asking us for Metallica and we were finally able to line up their free dates with our schedule.”
In September 2009, singer James Hetfield told a Quebec City journalist that a show on the Plains of Abraham was definitely one of their priorities. “It’s on our ‘to do list’,” he said at the time.
Metallica will not be performing often this summer, and they promise to put on a super show with their greatest hits.
“Québec fans, and particularly Quebec City fans, have always been crazy about Metallica,” General Manager Daniel Gélinas pointed out. “We expect this show to draw one of the biggest crowds of the event. We already know that thousands of people will be coming from all over for the concert.”
Founded in 1981 and made up today of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo, Metallica has sold over 100 million albums and has earned 9 Grammy Awards. In addition to that, the band got the honour of being named MTV Rock Icons in 2003 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
Celebrated guitarist Joe Satriani will open for the American band, giving Kirk Hammett the chance to reunite with his former teacher. Satriani, nicknamed ‘Satch’, has taught guitar to a number of famous musicians. Influenced by Jimi Hendrix, he has played with Mick Jagger and Deep Purple and is a member of Chickenfoot, along with former members of Van Halen and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Dance Laury Dance will be first up on the stage that evening. These five festive rock’ n roll musicians from Québec won a Prix Miroir at the Festival d'été de Québec last year for their amazing performance at the Cercle.

The Hydro-Québec flashing passes
The main attractions on the program for this 44th edition of the Festival d’été de Québec, which will take place this year from July 7 - 17, will be announced on April 27. Hydro-Québec flashing passes will go on pre-sale the next day, April 28.
As was the case last year, 60,000 flashing passes and RFID bracelets will be sold at an advance sale price at METRO supermarkets in the greater Quebec City area.
Starting Saturday, April 30, festival fans will be able to purchase their passes online or by phone at the regular price. The price of this year’s pass will also be announced on April 27.

The 44th edition of the Festival de Québec will be held from July 7 to 17, 2011.

The Festival d’été de Québec is presented by Bell in collaboration with Molson Dry.

Tiny Engines Announce Free Download of Cattle Drums EP

In anticipation of Cattle Drums (Oneonta, NY) recording for their first full-length in May, Tiny Engines (Tigers Jaw, CSTVT, Restorations) is excited to announce a free download of the band's debut. The Boy Kisser Sessions + 3 is an eight song collection that puts together the original debut of the band with three newer tracks that were recorded near the end of 2010. The EP was digitally released in February on Tiny Engines. Of course you can still download via iTunes as well.

You can sample the track "Who Punched Pat Moore's Face" on RCRD LBL. Additionally, you can listen to "Sluts And Coconuts" from The Boy Kisser Sessions + 3 (mp3)

Also, make sure to check out an amazing video shot in Cattle Drums' hometown of the band performing the song "Two Pigeons" on a rooftop. You can see that here.

Remember when indie music was wild and unpredictable? Remember when bands were hard to pigeonhole into neat little sub-genres? Well, Cattle Drums will remind you if you have forgotten. Hailing from upstate NY, you might shrug your shoulders at a band named Cattle Drums but you would be remiss by doing so. Mixing post-punk, emo/hardcore, shards of math rock and even traces of dark Americana, Cattle Drums distinguish themselves as purveyors of a sound not yet recognizable to our pampered, innocent ears. Lyrically ambiguous and instrumentally ambitious with harsh, aggressive tones, Cattle Drums truly are a wild awakening for the senses. These songs defy classification and open the listener up to create their own unique interpretation of the Cattle Drums sound. Need a shock to the system to break you from the mundane of the daily grind? Delve into the madness of the Cattle Drums experience and witness a band operating only by their keen sense of artistic expression. Eccentric and chaotic yet always melodic and intoxicating, Cattle Drums are kicking up dust and noise unlike anybody else right now. Just imagine what is yet to come.
The band is heading into the studio to record their first LP in May followed by a Summer full of touring. A Fall release date is tentatively scheduled for the LP on Tiny Engines.

FREE EP from Matt Lowell

NYC indie-rock artist, Matt Lowell has decided to give away his recently released EP, Swan Lake, for free on his bandcamp until next Tuesday, April 26th!
Lowell just released Swan Lake on March 8th, co-written with Dead Oceans Recording artist John Vanderslice and produced by Joel Hamilton (Black Keys, Matisyahu, Sparklehorse) and John Davis at Avatar Studios (John Mayer, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith).

FREE DOWNLOAD: MATT LOWELL'S BANDCAMP

Lowell has transformed his sound from the singer-songwriter arena to an impressive artwork of intricate instrumental parts and thought-provoking lyrics that showcase his indie credibility. After one listen you can feel that throughout Lowell’s musical career, this album showcases who he truly is as a musician. After graduating Berklee College of Music, having two EPs under his belt, an extensive tour history, and placement on various TV programs, there is no question this will be a highly anticipated release for 2011.
Native to the NYC music scene, Lowell has played well over 100 shows at popular venues such as BB Kings, Mercury Lounge, Gramercy Theatre, Highline Ballroom and Irving Plaza, and festivals such as SXSW, CMJ and Sundance Film Festival. He opened for well-known acts such as Eve6, Jeffrey Gaines, Martin Sexton, Marcy Playground, Val Emmich, Will Dailey, Tony Lucca, Serena Ryder, Howie Day and many others. In addition, Lowell’s first EP, First Taste, had songs featured in TV shows such as Real World Brooklyn, ESPN, and the Everwood DVD.
Being voted an “Artist To Watch” by Clear Channel Lowell’s warm, enveloping voice is likely familiar to your ears. Lowell has recently made his debut late-night television performance on NBC’s NY Nonstop “All Night With Joey Reynolds”, as well has having previously performed on FOX Boston. Having his live band currently include Joe Tomino on drums, from Matisyahu and Dub Trio, and John Davis on Bass, from JoJo Mayers NERVE, make the live shows an experience you don’t want to miss!

The band has written a message to all of their fans, which you can read below.

Hello friends,
So it's been a while and some things have happened lately that have left some of you guys speculating as to what's going on with us. Well, let me just cut right to the chase: We (Rico, Augie, Mike, John, and Kyle) have made the tough decision to leave You, Me, And Everyone We Know. The reason for this, without getting into specifics, is that it recently came to light that Ben had made some decisions that directly affected us as people and to the band as an entity throughout it's existence, and we just felt these issues coming to light were irreparable for us, making it a situation where we couldn't imagine getting back in the van or writing a song with him. This decision, and I assure you it was not an easy one to make, unfortunately had to be made in haste, as is the nature of our business and more specifically our situation at the time. As most of you know, we had immediate touring plans with other amazing bands and we just couldn't wait any longer on making this eventual decision. This was done out of respect for these bands, promoters, and to you our fans.
The most saddening part in all of this is thinking about the fans and also the people (fans still included) who worked so hard to get us where we were and put so much faith in us. We had a great team and great fans and it pains us to think that this might reflect poorly on any us as individuals or professionals, but it was just something that we had to do for ourselves. Now, whether this means it's the end of the band or if Ben will continue on as You, Me, And Everyone We Know is still yet to be seen. If he does continue on, please don't stop listening. In fact, don't stop listening at all. We have a decently-sized catalogue of music that is very important to us, especially the latest DOGHOUSE RECORDS release "SOME THINGS DON'T WASH OUT" and one more on the way in our upcoming 7" / EP on TOPSHELF RECORDS, appropriately named "THINGS ARE REALLY WIERD RIGHT NOW". None of this means that we don't still love the songs we wrote for this band, that we didn't lovingly craft each and every one at the time, or that the essence of the songs is somehow tainted: it's not. That being said, here's the obligatory "you haven't heard the last of us" bit. We all love music and fully plan and staying in it. So we'll be around, writing, putting out music, touring, etc., we'll still be here.
It's been a hell of a ride, and as sad as it is to say goodbye for now (and as much as I hate to put another cliche in here), here's to new beginnings. Your support has meant more to us than you'll ever know!

See ya real soon!
-Rico, Augie, Mike, John, and Kyle

FROM BEN:
Hello,
I'm very sorry to everyone i've let down with my actions that led to this news. I respect the guys decision to move on, I can't blame them really, and I do wish them the best with all of their future endeavors. As far the band as an entity is concerned, well im not too sure. Im hoping that with some time and effort, these wounds may heal and we may one day play some shows with (at the very least) some of this lineup. I don't know how I feel about continuing on at this point under this name otherwise (it's pretty banged up at this point). I suppose only time will tell. For now, im going to focus on staying sober and getting some help fixing the parts of me that make such bad decisions. Thank you all for your time and patience. I hope to see you all again someday soon.

Thank you for everything!
Ben

Elton John at the Festival d'été de Québec

The Festival d’été de Québec is proud to announce that Elton John will perform on the Bell stage of the Plains of Abraham, Saturday, July 9 in a concert that we can already qualify as memorable. The international star will feature his number one hits and classic album tracks from throughout his incredible five-decade career.

“Everybody has an Elton John song in their head. And most of them bring back memories. There is no doubt in our minds that this concert will be one of the powerful moments of the Festival,” Dominique Goulet, Program Director for the Festival d’été de Québec, affirmed.

Elton John’s band includes Davey Johnstone on guitar, Bob Birch on bass, John Mahon on percussion, Nigel Olsson on drums, and Kim Bullard on keyboards. One of the most successful live acts on the road today, Elton and his band put on the kind of concert you will never forget: the entire audience standing, dancing and singing along with much-loved classic songs such as “Your Song”, “Daniel”, “Rocket Man”, “Bennie and the Jets” and many more, including selections from The Union, Elton and Leon Russell's critically acclaimed album on Decca Records available now. The album features a variety of musical genres from R&B, Soul, Gospel, Pop and Rock. Rolling Stone magazine gave The Union 5 stars. In addition, the first single, “If It Wasn’t for Bad,” was nominated for a Grammy in 2011 for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.

“We’ve added another name to the list of superstars that have played the Festival since 2004. This is why the reputation of the Festival d’été de Québec keeps on growing year after year and helps put Quebec City in the international spotlight,” General Manager Daniel Gélinas went on to say.

The monumental career of international singer, songwriter and performer Elton John spans five decades. He is one of the top-selling solo artists of all time, with 35 gold and 25 platinum albums, 29 consecutive Top 40 hits, and he has sold more than 250 million records worldwide. John holds the record for the biggest selling single of all time, “Candle in the Wind,” which sold 37 million copies. Since his career began in 1969 he has played almost 3,000 concerts worldwide.

Man The Change - Weather The Storm Free Download

Brooklyn, NY punk-rockers Man The Change are excited to announce their newest release, Weather The Storm, is now up for free download from Death To False Hope Records.
Crisscrossing through multiple layers of the punk genre like a couple of girls playing double-dutch, Brooklynites Man the Change tackle their first full-length Weather The Storm with an energy that only exists in bands that truly love what they’re doing. Hooky and riff ridden, Man the Change encompasses the melodic qualities of pop-punk while pairing them with nitty-gritty vocals that growl and grind their way through every verse. A more poppy pick up from the band’s two previous EP’s, Weather The Storm is an impressive leap into mature songwriting. Hooky melodies that occasionally delve into the bop of skate rock may be the added enrichment to this new release, but the band still stands by their meat and potatoes with the gruff vocals and aggressive percussion delivered in these eight tracks.

You can listen to "Rambo Vs Bas Rutten (1v1)" from Weather The Storm (mp3)

Weather The Storm is a taste of the other side for listeners; hardcore kids can wean themselves off aggression and into melody, while the more poppy at heart can test the waters of something a little heavier. Whatever your poison, chances are Man the Change will hit the spot.

You Say Party announcement...

Becky, Derek and I are announcing the immediate cease to activity as YSP.
Call it a hiatus.
Call it a break.
Call it whatever you want.

It's been a hard year for us. Not a bad year. We've experienced wonderful support from people.

But you gotta listen to your body and your mind when it begins to revolt against what you think it is you have to do.

So we're gonna stop for a while, and we're gonna work on who we are as people.
We know that everyone understands exactly why and where we're coming from.

Thanks for the support over the years.
Special thanks to Robert and Al for their commitment over the last year
and to the team members we worked with over the last 7 years.

Please enjoy this music video we made in Abbotsford last summer (Click still to view).

Animal Style Records to Release Debut LP from BORN WITHOUT BONES

Animal Style Records is stoked to announce that on May 17th it will release Say Hello, the debut full-length from BORN WITHOUT BONES (Milford, MA).
Originally self-released digitally last year by the band via Bandcamp as a free / pay-what-you-want download, Animal Style will give this terrific record a proper vinyl release with a limited pressing of 500 12-inches on three colorways (100 black / 200 sky blue / 200 wheat yellow). Each copy will come with a full album download, plus an additional eight unreleased B-side tracks. You can stream the first of these B-sides exclusively at Property Of Zack, which will also be revealing one new B-side every week leading up to the release date.
It's worth noting that the record (minus the bonus material) is still available for free download at Bandcamp, and you can purchase it from iTunes as well.
Recorded by Kory Gable (Strike Anywhere, The Dangerous Summer, I Call Fives), Say Hello is an incredibly varied, occasionally theatrical yet highly infectious full-length that finds Born Without Bones laying a rock-solid foundation on the basis of pop and punk rock. Still, the framework of these 12 songs is fortified by a wide array of influences, which is to say that there's no shortage of intriguing ideas on the record. Of course, if these ideas weren't so perfectly executed, Say Hello would not make nearly the impact it does. While Born Without Bones' primary goal seems to be crafting upbeat, dynamic songs with melodies that last for days and days, the band's undeniable ambition and ability to transition from flat-out punk burners to sweet, piano-laced offerings to intimate acoustic numbers makes for one impressive debut.

Topshelf Records Release Debut LP from By Surprise

Topshelf Records (Grown Ups, My Heart To Joy, Pianos Become The Teeth) is excited to announce the debut 12" from By Surprise (Haddon Heights, NJ), Mountain Smashers, is now available. First pressing of the vinyl will be limited to 500 (400 Black and 100 Smoke). Friend Of Mine in Japan will be releasing a CD version in early Summer.
To celebrate this week's release, you can download two tracks from Mountain Smashers. Check out "Realometer on RCRD LBL and "$600 Exorcism" on Rock Sound. You can also stream the album in its entirety on Punknews.org.
Also, the band recently did a Y Rock Studio Session where they performed six songs. You can listen/download those songs at WXPN's local music blog The Key.
Safely guarded behind four pairs of glasses and an arsenal of awkward tendencies, the members of By Surprise have spent an equal amount of time combing through the forgotten dust-filled grooves of 7-inch records released during the 90s indie label boom, as they have with the off-beat and inspirational works of Henry David Thoreau, Jack Kerouac, and Douglas Adams. Mountain Smashers, the band’s first full-length album, romanticizes with the feelings of reluctance we’ve all felt towards growing up, slowing down, losing touch, and selling out. Clocking in at thirty minutes, it combines both the influence of those dusty 7” records, often overlooked, with the lessons learned from the aforementioned authors. It admits defeat, while exuding reassurance. It questions the norms, while embracing the inevitable. The guitars are loud and the feedback bleeds, the vocals clash in uniformed motion, and the lyrics are kind of weird. It’s by far the band’s most focused effort to date, and in some ways, it’s their most adventurous.
Mountain Smashers was recorded in the band’s hometown of Haddon Heights, NJ at The Gradwell House with Dave Downham of Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start, and was mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service. Weston, bassist of Shellac and an also elder statesman of the independent music scene, has also worked on records with such bands as Archers of Loaf, Boys Life, Polvo, The Get Up Kids, Vitreous Humor, Sebadoh, and LCD Soundsystem.

Only Thieves U.S. Tour!

Beginning next Wednesday (04/13), Tallahassee, Florida's ONLY THIEVES will embark on yet another month-long tour of the United States in support of its 2011 debut full-length, Heartless Romantics.
The ten-song CD was self-released on January 18th and is available from the band at shows. You can also purchase it from iTunes and other digital retailers. Heartless Romantics was recorded by Phil Martin (Look Mexico) and is the follow-up to Only Thieves' critically acclaimed 2009 EP, Greetings From Levy Park, T.L.H.
Encompassing all the ethos of those torch-bearing bands of our youth - The Replacements, Superdrag and Buffalo Tom to name a few - Only Thieves blends that classic power-pop sound with the ingenuity and modifications that outfits like the Gaslight Anthem and Lemuria have poured into today's punk and indie genres. There is an undefinable style and substance, not to mention a dynamic progression that when done right, makes driving, hook-filled rock sound absolutely timeless. Heartless Romantics is a record that is truly nostalgic without seeming retro, but it's also modern without sounding polished.

Apparat New Album This Summer

As long time admirers of Apparat, Mute are proud to announce that this world-renowned artist has now joined their roster.

GALACTIC TO RELEASE LIVE ALBUM

New Orleans outfit GALACTIC has a well earned reputation as one of the most exhilarating live acts around. Last year the band released the critically acclaimed genre defying sonic tribute to the Big Easy entitled YA-KA-MAY, which The Boston Globe described as "an album that showcases a breathtaking array of New Orleans talent, from old-school R&B legends to influential underground hip-hop artists" and the Huffington Post proclaimed as “NOT your grandparents' New Orleans record!” Now the celebrated outfit offers up a rollicking live counterpart to YA-KA-MAY with The Other Side Of Midnight: Live In New Orleans out 5/3 via Anti- Records.
The album was recorded during an electrifying sold-out show at legendary New Orleans’ nightclub Tipitinas which has hosted countless luminaries such as the Neville Bros, the Meters, Dr. John and Professor Longhair. The venue has, of late, become something of a regular home court for GALACTIC, with the band playing multiple sold out shows at the historic club throughout the year. Like Ya-Ka-May, The Other Side of Midnight: Live in New Orleans features a host of guest appearances from the bawdy hip-shaking gender bending “bounce” star Big Freedia to local legends Cyril Neville and Trombone Shorty, the whole thing capturing GALACTIC’s deep musical relationship with their storied hometown. Only in a city like New Orleans could a night this raucous, sweaty and wild also be so incredibly profound.
Be sure to catch GALACTIC performing at the historic New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on May 5th alongside Wilco, and touring worldwide throughout the year.

SWTHRT – Release First Single from Debut Album

Southport, NC indie duo SWTHRT are excited to release the first single from their debut album, Compact Disc. "Boys With Problems" is now available for free download from Bandcamp. The first single also includes a B-side, an acoustic version of the album track, "I Hate This". Compact Disc will see a full free download release later this month on April 25th. Physical copies will also be available for purchase.
The band lovingly put together a making of the album video for Compact Disc. You can view that here.
Also, the band has made available their first recording, a cover of Beat Happening's "Indian Summer". The song can be downloaded on Bandcamp as well.

On May 17, CA’s FIGHT FAIR returns with a new Triple Crown Records EP titled Broken, which harkens back to the band’s roots. “After trying something new on our debut LP California Kicks, we wanted to do a record of songs that shows where the band came from, going back to our debut EP Settle The Score,” says front man Alex Bigman.

TEEN PUNK ROCKERS EMILY'S ARMY MAKES DEBUT WITH DON'T BE A DICK JUNE 14 ON ADELINE RECORDS, PRODUCED BY BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG‏

Teenage pop-punk group Emily’s Army is gearing up for the release of their full-length debut, Don’t Be A Dick, due June 14 on Adeline Records. YOUNG LEGIONNAIRE DEBUT VIDEO ON SPIN.COM

YOUNG LEGIONNAIRE, the brainchild of Gordon Moakes (Bloc Party) and Paul Mullen (yourcodenameis:milo), have issued the video for forthcoming first single, ‘Numbers’.
The video premiered yesterday exclusively on www.Spin.com and is today’s “video of the day”: http://www.spin.com/articles/exclusive-bloc-party-bassist-debuts-heavy-band. The clip can also be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_DMfPOjfoU.

Directed by Justin and James Lockey, the clip showcases the band’s frenetic style and heavy, melodic sound. Produced by Rich Jackson (Future Of The Left) “Numbers” will be available digitally on May 2nd, followed by the released of their debut album, Crisis Works, on May 10. The band are playing a string of shows in the UK prior to album release including shows alongside DFA1979, Pulled Apart by Horses, appearances at Live at Leeds, Liverpool Sound City and the Camden Crawl. Following that, they will be playing shows across Europe.
Full list of confirmed dates below.
YOUNG LEGIONNAIRE initially started following a chance meeting between Paul and Gordon during the recording sessions for the Print Is Dead album in 2006, where Gordon guested on the track ‘Wait a Minute’ with Paul and the rest of YCNI:M. Some more meetings and conversations followed, eventually leading to their first rehearsals together as a band in 2009. Now joined by full time drummer Dean Pearson, 2011 will see the fruits of their labour.
The album is about noise, volume, being heavy and being loud, as Gordon puts it; ‘(We wanted) To make a big, juddering noise but weave a trail of melody through it’. He goes on; ‘Even though the format of guitar, bass, drums and vocal is established, is nothing ground-breaking, the possibilities are endless. There's always another riff to write, a heavier sound to find. And we're looking for the magic in the gaps between the riffs too. There's a tenderness to it, a fragility almost, that we stumbled upon, and I'm inspired by that, to discover that. The record is about the brutal, the fragile and the possible.’

Run, Forever - On Tour

Beginning next Tuesday with a week of shows along the East Coast, followed by a two-month US tour in May and June, Run, Forever (Pittsburgh, P.A.) will find itself on the road for most of the Spring, playing shows in support of its debut full-length, The Devil, And Death, And Me.
Originally self-released by the trio in July of 2010 and officially re-issued by Solidarity Recordings (imadethismistake, The Methadones, The Honor System) a few months later, the California punk label has just pressed a 12" vinyl version of this terrific album, which you can grab here or from the band at shows. Act fast though - the LP is extremely limited (140 x black vinyl).
Front to back, The Devil, And Death, And Me is rousing, heartfelt collection of songs that touches on issues such as the corruption of organized religion, politics and most prominently, the struggle to overcome the tragic loss of former band mate Corey James Wolfram. From fist-pumping, sing-along punk anthems to more intimate acoustic numbers, Run, Forever explores the mystery of death through both the darker and more optimistic parts of its cycle without ever straying from writing wholly engaging, undeniably catchy tunes.
Case in point, album opener, the rollicking, infectious "A Sequence Of Sad Events," is a testimony to the band's friendship with Wolfram as well as the disbelieve and hardship of loosing someone you love. To download the song, go here (free mp3).

In other news, the band just finished recording 5 new songs, 2 of which will appear on a split 7" with Atlanta, GA's The Wild (Asian Man / Quote Unquote). The record will also be issued by Solidarity. More info soon.
As always, if you'd like to attend a show or speak with the Run, Forever, drop me a line here. Please note that shows for the May-June US tour are currently being booked but updates can be found here.
