Ghost Heart - The Tunnel LP / CD Out Tomorrow

Tomorrow (01/29/11), Grand Rapids, Michigan quartet Ghost Heart will see the release of its stunning debut full-length, The Tunnel, via Friction Records (Bars Of Gold, Bear Versus Shark, La Dispute, Victor! Fix The Sun).
Available on both CD and 12" vinyl (clear + pink / amber), The Tunnel features accessible yet expansive rock songs that synthesize electronica, American folk, samples, tribal percussion, shoegaze guitar sounds and layered vocals to produce an effect that is at once joyously communal and deeply personal. Ghost Heart's sound has been described by the Detroit Metro Times as “a little of Animal Collective and Vampire Weekend, only with more heart.” Instantly gratifying in some moments, challenging in others, The Tunnel is a unique listening experience.
To order a copy from Friction, go here. And if you're in the Grand Rapids area tomorrow night, you can also grab one at Ghost Heart's record release show at Founders.
In related news, the band recently teamed up with the Halfway House music blog to film three live songs, including two from The Tunnel as well as a brand new track titled "Sick Black Lung." All three videos from the Halfway House Sessions can be viewed here.
Finally, the song "No Canticle" from the album is available as a free mp3 download here. Additional Ghost Heart media can be found here.

Lionize Added To Vans Warped Tour 2011

New Album Out Feb 8 On Hardline Entertainment
Destruction Manual Produced by J. Robbins (Jawbox) & Features Guest Appearances By David Hinds & Selwyn Brown Of Steel Pulse & Tim Sult of Clutch
Band On Tour Now With Authority Zero and Flatfoot 56
Dates With Streetlight Manifesto Begin in February 10

Maryland-based reggae/rock band LIONIZE, winners of the 2010 High Times Magazine ‘Doobie Award’ for Best Reggae/Soul Record for ‘SPACE POPE AND THE GLASS MACHINE (for which they beat out such nominees as Matisyahu, Easystar Allstars and Tarrus Riley) have been added to the lineup for the 2011 Vans Warped Tour where they are set to perform on the Alternative Press/Advent Stage. Head over to the Warped Tour website to check out an exclusive message from the band:

Lionize has been busy touring and gearing up for the Feb 8th release of their new album DESTRUCTION MANUAL on Southern California based indie label, Hardline Entertainment.
Gaining fans across the world, LIONIZE takes pride in their original sound, DIY work ethic and fiery live shows. DESTRUCTION MANUAL, (produced by J. Robbins of Jawbox) finds the band continuing its exploration of the stoner-rock, funk and reggae landscapes.
This twelve-song LP calls to mind classic reggae and rock albums with a decidedly modern spin. The band's foundation on drums and bass are LaMel Randolgh and Henry Upton who hint at a rock-and-roll version of Sly and Robbie joined with the classic scorching Hammond organ and key sounds from Chris Brooks and the commanding guitar and vocal work of Nathan Bergman.
Reggae heavyweights David Hinds and Selwyn Brown of Steel Pulse lend their vocal talents on the track ‘Killers and Crooks’ as well as stalwart guitar work from Tim Sult of Clutch who also lends his talents throughout this record. Lionize continues to tour over 200 dates a year, having been tapped to open up for bands such as Clutch, Galactic, Steel Pulse and Bad Brains. LIONIZE also pulled double duty backing and supporting Lee "Scratch" Perry, garnering a slew of positive reviews.
Between recording in Kingston, Jamaica with Sidney Mills (Steel Pulse), collaborating on and off stage with artists such as Ozomatli and Chali 2na, and supporting heavy metal favorites Kylesa and cKy, the band begins 2011 on quite an auspicious note.
With DESTRUCTION MANUAL set to be released on Feb 8, Lionize is wrapping up a winter tour with Authority Zero tomorrow night in San Diego and will be launching a tour with Streetlight Manifesto on Feb. 10. The band’s run on the entire Vans Warped Tour will kick off June 24th in Dallas (see dates below.)

LIONIZE also contribute one track off of "Destruction Manual" to Hardline Entertainment’s latest label sampler which is available as a free download at

Young Galaxy | Tour Update and "We Have Everything" MP3

Montreal's Young Galaxy are already rescheduling tour dates in support of their brilliant new album Shapeshifting. The band will now be hitting the road starting in the US with fellow Montreal residients and label-mates Winter Gloves (details below). Young Galaxy's third album will be available from February 8th on Paper Bag Records.

Download the "We Have Everything" MP3 here.

Young Galaxy's new album is unlike anything they have done before. Shapeshifting was recorded in Montreal and then sent away, across the ocean, to one of the world's most acclaimed and secretive producers. For nine months, Dan Lissvik, half of the Swedish duo Studio, curved and refashioned the tracks; he made and remade them. The finished album is a thing of cold reverb, hot drums and synth.
2010 was a busy year for the band as they also saw their last album, Invisible Republic, included on the long-list for the Polaris Music Prize. More recently, one of the album's stand-out tracks, "Destroyer", was nominated for the SOCAN Echo Songwriting Prize alongside songs from The Besnard Lakes, Caribou, Brasstronaut and Crystal Castles. They band has also shared the stage with the likes of Arcade Fire, Stars, Twin Shadow and many more.
All Red was Winter Gloves’ sophomore release on Paper Bag Records, a collection of ten songs that the band had been tinkering with on and off-stage during their past year on the road, and brought back to their Montreal studio to record over the last winter. In a return to the roots of the original EP that first introduced Winter Gloves’ poppy mix of gritty bass and synths sound, All Red was produced by the band’s Charles F (lead singer, guitar, synths). The foursome is rounded out with Patrick Sayers on drums, Vincent Chalifour on bass and synths, and Nico Ormiston on guitar and bringing back the glockenspiel that was a well-mentioned highlight on their debut about a girl album.

Manafest has it all. A fresh, inventive sound that borrows equally from hip-hop, rap and some of the more sonically tuned elements of rock and roll? Check. Over 100,000 albums sold worldwide? You got it. Over 1,000 live shows performed in four continents over the last six years? No question.
And now Manafest (AKA Chris Greenwood) is releasing three back-to-back music videos featuring some of the most poignant tracks off of his latest full-length album The Chase. ‘Bring The Ruckus’ is the first in the series and it packs quite the punch. Directed by Chris Stacey, ‘Bring The Ruckus’ features fight choreography from the same trainers who worked on Jet Li’s smash movie ‘Hero.’ Throughout the video, Manafest channels his inner Jet Li; he battles his inner demons, personified by a series of vicious street fighters. These fight sequences are interspersed with shots of a rabid, adoring crowd which give weight to the song’s angst-filled yet ultimately optimistic undertones.
Displaying intensely personal emcee skills, Manafest fuses his gutsy take on hip-hop with aggressively tuned rock. ‘Bring The Ruckus’ is the kind of video which will stay with viewers long after it fades out and the battle is won.
The next video in the series will be ‘Everytime You Run,’ one of the record’s most moving tracks featuring a radio-ready chorus that elevates the track to epic new heights. The video tells the dramatic tale of a car crash, highlighting Manafest’s emotional appeal. He’s no softy, but certainly knows how to captivate audiences as the protagonist of the video comes to terms with his fate.
Completing the series is the video for ‘Renegade’ featuring Trevor McNevan from Thousand Foot Krutch and judging from the still pictured above, these videos will only add to the list of accomplishments in what is quickly becoming a storied musical career for Manafest.
His accolades speak for themselves, and his future is full of poise and promise. Manafest has already received a Juno nomination and The Chase has sold 30,000 copies worldwide within a year of its release. His videos have been featured on MuchMusic and have received heavy rotation on MuchLoud. February sees him touring New Zealand with a US tour in the spring with Superchick playing 800 plus capacity venues.

Born Ruffians | Canadian Tour and New Video

Born Ruffians are set to embark on an eighteen-date tour of Canada in support of their second album Say It which was released in June of 2010 on Paper Bag Records. Support on the western leg of the tour will come from Sheezer with First Rate People taking in dates from Peterborough to Montreal (details below). Born Ruffians have also just completed a new video 'The Ballad Of Moose Bruce' which premiered last night on MuchMusic's The Wedge.
If Born Ruffians’ 2008 debut album Red Yellow and Blue was the result of a talented and precocious gang of freshmen, their 2010 follow-up, Say It, would be the project they left school to finish — a declaration that they’re smart and ambitious enough to make it on their own, and furthermore, that they’re in it for the long haul.
Taking two weeks to record the album, the band finds itself teaming up again with producer Rusty Santos. The Ruffians and co. holed up at Mississauga’s Metalworks studio and loosed the reins on their ambitions, experimenting with Minimoogs and saxophones before eventually scaling much of it back in the mixing process. The result is a very mature album, further amplifying the band’s unique voice and sound, ready to take them as far as they want to go.

Under the moniker Belladonnakillz Peter Moskalyk seamlessly married jungle, punk and ballads with thoughtful melodies and mature songwriting. Shortly after returning from his first European tour Peter passed away at the premature age of 31 last October. A kind and charismatic person, as well as gifted and classically trained pianist, his presence in Toronto's own unique music scene is already sorely missed. Belladonnakillz has released 3 albums, “Perverted & Proud” (2005 - Toronto's Dross:tik Records), “As If” (2006 - Sublight Records) and “Sorry, Try Again” (2009 - Dross:tik). Belladonnakillz was also a frequent collaborator with Knifehandchop of Tigerbeat6 Records and had his foreboding track ‘Kill Bella Donna’ remixed by German hardcore rave DJ the Panacea.

"Remembering Peter" is being held on Saturday, February 19th at Neutral. Admission is $5 at the door. This will be a 19 plus event, doors open at 8pm. The lineup consists solely of Peter's dear friends, musical collaborators, and those who shared the stage with him. The full performance lineup is as follows: Ken Margoe - Illusionist, Goldie Luxx, Pussy, Famine, Cousin Dog, Ghost Television, B7, Loopsy Dazy, C64, Goodfellaz DJs and Alan Belerique. Night hosted by long time Toronto party MC Gobz the Zombie.

All proceeds go to the Moskalyk family, no guest list is available except for immediate family.

Key acts:
Ken Margoe, C64, Goldie Luxx

Illness forces You Say Party to pull out of North American dates with Young Galaxy.

Vancouver-based You Say Party have been forced to pull out of their upcoming co-headline tour with label-mates Young Galaxy. Singer Becky Ninkovic has been battling bronchitis and has been advised to rest forcing the band to cancel their participation in the tour. A number of the dates have already been rescheduled with Young Galaxy being joined by fellow Montreal residents Winter Gloves. A full list of confirmed dates will be announced soon.
Young Galaxy's stunning new album Shapeshifting will be released on February 8th and is unlike anything the band has done before. Shapeshifting was recorded in Montreal and then sent away, across the ocean, to one of the world's most acclaimed and secretive producers. Canadian Music Week is pleased to announce that Sarah McLachlan, the Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter, will be honoured with the Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award in recognition of her longstanding commitment to charitable initiatives. The award – bestowed to an individual having demonstrated the highest ideals and qualities of humanitarian service and in doing so, has reflected those ideals of courage and compassion – will be presented at the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, during Canadian Music Week in Toronto.
Since the release of her gold-selling debut album Touch in 1988, Sarah McLachlan has sold over 40 million recordings worldwide. Her celebrated career has been recognized with multi-platinum sales of her albums, numerous nominations and music awards, as well as sold-out tours around the world. Along with her music successes, Sarah McLachlan is renowned as a benevolent supporter of social change, a spokesperson for animal rights, and an advocate of music education, contributing to organizations and charities worldwide.
In 1997, Sarah McLachlan founded Lilith Fair, a touring festival organized to showcase and promote women in music. Over its three-year history, the festival brought together two million people and raised more than $7 million for charities and women’s shelters across North America. One of the biggest music festivals of the 1990s, Lilith Fair was the most successful all-female music festival in history, helping launch the careers of several well-known female artists. After an eleven-year hiatus, McLachlan re-launched the festival in June 2010 and in partnership with the i4c Campaign, committed to contributing $1 from each ticket sold to mobilize investments for companies that drive social and environmental change.
On the success of Lilith Fair, Sarah McLachlan was honoured with the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Visionary Award in 1998 for advancing the careers of women in music. New York Governor George Pataki presented the singer with the award on the 150th anniversary of the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, NY. Two years later, McLachlan was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada for her outstanding achievements, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
In addition to the Lilith Fair concert tours, Sarah McLachlan has also been involved in several other philanthropic causes. In early 2005, she took part in a star-studded tsunami disaster relief telethon, which aired on NBC. She also headlined a benefit concert in Vancouver, titled “One World: The Concert for Tsunami Relief”, along with fellow Canadian superstars Avril Lavigne and Bryan Adams, raising over $3.5 million for several Canadian aid agencies working in south and southeast Asia. Later that year, she performed on the Philadelphia stage of Live 8, the multi-city anniversary celebration of Live Aid and G8 summit protest coordinated by Live Aid founder Bob Geldof.
In September 2004, Sarah McLachlan released the socially charged video “World On Fire”. Grammy-nominated for Best Short Form Music Video, it cost only $15 to make with the remainder of the $150,000 production budget distributed among eleven charitable organizations around the world including CARE, Engineers Without Borders, Help The Aged, Warchild, and Heifer International.
A proponent of music education, the Vancouver-based singer/songwriter founded the Sarah McLachlan Foundation in 1999 to help bring music into the lives of young Canadians, especially in underserved communities. The impact of participation is profound; building self-esteem, and fostering creativity in young people through the power of music. Four years later, she established the first Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach Program — an Arts Umbrella Project in Vancouver’s inner city. The program offers students free music lessons, educational workshops, mentorship and support networks.
Sarah McLachlan is an avid supporter of animal welfare and the ASPCA. She filmed a two-minute advertisement for the organization which featured her song “Angel”, and has since helped raise about $30 million for the ASPCA since it began airing in 2003. She has also been the spokesperson for the B.C. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, advocating the kind, caring and humane treatment of animals since 2006.
Sarah McLachlan is an eight-time JUNO Award winner and three-time Grammy Award winner. Since her signing with Arista Records nearly two decades ago, every one of her albums has been certified gold, platinum, or multi-platinum by CRIA and the RIAA, while five of her albums have reached the Billboard Top 15. In addition to Touch, her award-winning catalog includes a succession of remarkable albums including her 1994 breakthrough Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (3X-platinum), her landmark Surfacing (10X-platinum), 1999’s Mirrorball (4X platinum), 2003‘s Afterglow (2X-platinum) and her first-ever career anthology Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan, released in 2008. On June 15, 2010, Sarah McLachlan released her first studio album of new material in seven years, Laws of Illusion.
Sarah McLachlan follows previous Humanitarian Spirit Award recipients Gary Slaight, Tom Cochrane and Denise Donlon.

Southern California’s renowned independent rock label, Epitaph Records, announces today the signing of Raleigh, North Carolina based rock sextet Alesana. In a deal inked in late 2010, Alesana plans to release their fourth studio album in late 2011. The group is currently on a US tour with former Epitaph band Escape The Fate.
Formed in 2004, Alesana exploded on to the scene with the release of their debut full-length On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax in 2007. Now comprised of Shawn Milke (vocals/guitars), Dennis Lee (vocals), Patrick Thompson (guitar), Alex Torres (guitar), Shane Crump (bass) and Jeremy Bryan (drums), Alesana has become a staple band in the post-hardcore genre over the past several years, building their sound and career around a tightknit style of swift attacking guitar riffs and bottom dropping breakdowns intricately blended with the band’s duel melodic/snarling vocals all assembled with skillful songwriting.
The band has released two additional full-lengths, 2008’s Where Myth Fades to Legend and 2009’s The Emptiness, performed at 2007 and 2010’s Vans Warped Tour and 2009’s Australian Soundwave Festival and toured with the likes of Chiodos, Silverstein, The Devil Wears Prada, A Day To Remember, Bayside, Mayday Parade and Drop Dead Gorgeous among others, amassing a worldwide army of fans along the way. Ultraviolet Sound, the Los Angeles based electro-dance-pop duo is set to release their highly awaited self-titled Odds On Records debut album on April 12th, 2011. The duo consisting of Sarah Hudson and Sami Diament are riding the success from their first single “Suck My Kiss” which was released in 2010. "Suck My Kiss" has been added to DJ's playlists in the hottest clubs since its release and broke into the Top 25 on the Billboard Dance chart and gained notoriety on the national Pop radio scene. The group's debut music video directed by Constellation Jones (Eminem, James Blunt, Lady Gaga) premiered on MTV's Logo Channel. The power synths, club drums, and Sarah's striking vocal melodies, this gets everyone moving on the dancefloor.
Ultraviolet Sound has also been garnering attention from some of today’s biggest pop icons, having shared the stage with the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Robyn, and N.E.R.D. The debut record is filled with songs that have huge sing along hooks, powerful forward driving bass and synth parts, and is rounded out with mellow segments that allow the beat to drop hard. Fist pumping will be a natural occurrence to anyone who listens to it.

Ruby Isle stream Appetite for Destruction, play album release show!

Ruby Isle will be hitting the stage for the first time in 2011 presenting their take on Guns N' Roses classic LP Appetite for Destruction at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis Saturday January 29th. The date is being advertised as the CD release show but no cd's will be sold due to reasons we can not say. But surprises will be in store and you can't keep a "Sweet Child of Mine," down. If you would like to hear the record it will be streaming on SPINNER Listening Party all week starting January 25th, until reasons I can not say will probably take it down! For more info on Ruby Isle taking on Guns N' Roses check out or if you would like to chat to the band about pissing off Axl Rose let me know! For now you can still watch the 2 videos the band made as well... Mr. Brownstone My Michelle The “party band of the apocalypse” has finally finished their epic attack on Guns N’ Roses’ 1988 LP Appetite for Destruction. Ruby Isle, known best for dance floor versions of Animal Collective, Decemberists and Bon Iver has finally dropped the appropriately titled Appetite for Destruction, a cover-to-cover electronic homage to the 20th best rock record of the 1980s (seriously Rolling Stone, only 20th?). What started as a straightforward electronic adaptation of GNR’s debut slowly evolved into a spaced-out experiment incorporating both live and electronic instrumentation. Ruby Isle vocalist Mark Mallman commented, “In the beginning of recording everything just seemed too obvious. We decided to go into the studio and bring in musicians with diverse musical backgrounds to make this thing a little more interesting.” The extended sound palette includes a jazz quartet, French female vocals, courtesy of Nicole Godiva of Waxx Maxx, live strings and a guest appearance from Har Mar Superstar on “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” Even though the electropop trio brought in more diverse musicians and instrumentation; according to drummer Aaron Lemay, the result is still “pretty fucking dancey”. In keeping with their notoriously high energy and sometimes dangerous live shows, the final product of the GNR inspired opus is both an earnest tribute to the original and a complete mockery of everything it stands for… basically a total contradiction. Microsamples from the original material are bent into 80s sounding synth patches that were pitched and mangled to produce the keyboard sounds used for most of the record. Drums were ripped, bent and forced into 808-like compliance.

Laura Jansen - Bells - 3/22 on Decca - Tour Dates

Dutch-born, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, Laura Jansen's debut album Bells will be released on Universal’s Decca Records, March 22, 2011.
A dreamy collection of piano-driven indie-pop songs, Bells has already gone platinum in Jansen’s native Holland, propelled by “Single Girls” the album's emotionally charged first single, and a marvelous cover of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody,” which has spent more than a year in the Top 10 on the Dutch singles chart.

In the U.S., Jansen is a fixture in the constellation of artists associated with Los Angeles nightclub The Hotel Café — a musical haven, creative incubator, and ultimately, national launching pad for such confessional-minded artists as Sara Bareilles, Priscilla Ahn, and Joshua Radin, whom Jansen toured with in 2008 and will hit the road with again in 2011. Josh T. Pearson - SXSW/New Single "Country Dumb" out Feb. 22

As a precursor to his debut solo album, Last Of The Country Gentlemen (out March 29, 2011), Josh T. Pearson will release the single, “Country Dumb” on February 22nd, 2011.
You might be wondering to yourself why his name sounds familiar --- Josh was part of the short-lived phenomenon that was Lift to Experience, which sadly released only one sprawling masterpiece, 2001's The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads.
I keep mentioning over and over that this band was SO beloved by John Peel were they that he had LTE record three sessions in five months and were included in the Best 125 Peel Sessions of all time.
An album standout, this exclusive single edit of ‘’Country Dumb” features renowned multi-instrumentalist and composer Dustin O’ Halloran on superbly subtle piano accompaniment. The release of ‘Country Dumb’ coincides with a UK tour, including two dates in London which are already sold out.
Pearson will make his much-anticipated return to SXSW this year, marking his US solo debut. The appearance at SXSW will be a homecoming for Pearson in more ways than one. The Texas native started his journey at the festival over a decade ago when Lift to Experience was first signed to Bella Union immediately following their performance in 2000.
Since the demise of Lift to Experience, Josh T. Pearson has spent many years adrift, only releasing one studio recording, ‘I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry’, a split 7” single with the Dirty Three, and an appearance on the song ‘Trophy’ included on the Mercury Prize-nominated Bat for Lashes album, Fur and Gold.

I'm from Barcelona-new record new MP3

I’m From Barcelona is THE biggest band in Sweden---literally! Armed with 27 member they are back and ready to share their third studio album, Forever Today, on April 19th.
“Get In Line” is the first single on Forever Today and will be released digitally with remixes by Montag and Flairs on February 1st.

1. Charlie Parker
2. Get In Line
3. Battleships
4. Always Spring
5. Can See Miles
6. Come On
7. Skipping A Beat
8. Dr. Landy
9. Game Is On
10. Forever Today

Forever Today was recorded over two sessions with the first session seeing all 27 members eating, sleeping, and playing together over 5 days in Gothenburg, laying down the basic tracks. For the second session, the band moved to Varberg for what front man and bandleader Emanuel Lundgren called, “A soul searching weekend spent by the sea, looking out at the surfers defying gravity outside.” “Something happens when we come together”, says Lundgren, “we wanted to capture that energy on tape so we decided to record the entire new album live in the studio.”
Forever Today is about the ups and downs of twenty-something people sharing a small space and a big dream.
Forever Today follows 2008’s Who Killed Harry Houdini?, I’m From Barcelona’s sophomore album which saw streaks of melancholy mixed into it’s colorful pop songs. Named Paste magazine’s #1 Favorite Oversized Band last year, Rolling Stone hailed Houdini as “10 gorgeous, lushly arranged folk tunes.” Celebrated for their ability to write infectious pop songs, the band’s 2007 debut, Let Me Introduce My Friends, propelled them into the hearts and minds of music lovers. Rolling Stone called the record, “Pretty damn charming”, The New York Times said it was “Euphoric” and Pitchfork gave it “Best New Music” distinction. Equally loved live and famous for their explosive birthday-like shows, Time Magazine named I’m From Barcelona’s appearance at Lollapalooza 2007 the #10 Best Live Performance of the year.

Shanks: February 11th Lee's Palace

February 11th at Lee’s Palace SHANKS will be celebrating the official public-release of The Dark Richard Show, their fourth record and second full length which already has received a nomination by Exclaim! for ‘Album of the Year.’ Produced by Kirk Starkey, this album focuses more on stripped-down arrangements that emphasizes SHANKS’ fresh chordal approach to busting out steep jams on the electric bass guitar.
Founded in 2005, SHANKS are the rock ‘n roll brainchild of songwriter/vocalist/bassist Ian Donald Starkey (aka Pistolwhip von Shankenstein). Alongside drummer Andrew Tyson McNenly the duo has years under their belt in perfecting their incendiary live show. SHANKS have performed in a variety of surreal situations, including in the midst of professional fireworks exhibitions, inside sheep pens, roller derby arenas and boxing rings.

Everyone’s favorite poet turned folk singer/songwriter Bradley Hathaway has released a rarity track entitled “A STORM COMING” left off his summer EP A Thousand Angry Panthers. The song contains Hathaway’s usual charm and twang with just a touch of the intensity we saw on Panthers, although it is clear why it did not fit in the dark gloomy mood of the EP. Hathaway explains the heart behind the track here.
A concept that all of us have dealt with in life at one time or another, Hathaway continues to produce words and melodies that tug at the heart strings. Though the songwriter claims that this isn’t necessarily a direction he sees to be more abundant in the future, he makes no promises. “It's just a song that stands on its own. I've not written another song like it since.” One thing that we can all appreciate about Bradley Hathaway is that he always keeps us guessing.
You can stream “A STORM COMING” on and purchase it on iTunes and most of the other digital providers including

The Rural Alberta Advantage | North American Tour Dates

As much as the sophomore album from The Rural Alberta Advantage, Departing, was originally conceived as a companion to their acclaimed debut Hometowns (which earned an 8.0 from Pitchfork), the band has allowed itself to stretch out. "It's ok to be bombastic at times," says Nils Edenloff with a smile.
One of the most striking aspects of The RAA is the propulsive drumming by Paul Banwatt. Songwriter and singer Edenloff outlines the songwriting process as he brings a song or an idea to the band, and “we'll all tear it apart and build it back up," he says.
Banwatt echoes, "Once we have a song, we work out the rhythmic aspect and build the song from that. The vocals are the core so I try to keep my drum parts related to the vocal melody." His meticulous approach to the drums helps to give Departing its dynamic ebb and flow, from the big floor toms that kick off the record (“Two Lovers”) to the linear drumming on “North Star,” (a beat created by only hitting one drum at a time). Paul also had a few revelations, like opening his hi-hat on “Muscle Relaxants,” which filled out the space of the intense, driving track.
Another trick that the band uses to keep the songs fresh is to write a song on guitar and then switch the main instrument to keyboard during the rebuilding process: "The Breakup,” “Under The Knife” and “Tornado '87” each came about this way," says Edenloff. Amy Cole then adds another element, be it percussion, vocals, or keyboard, filling out the arrangements.
After a breakthrough past couple of years that saw them earn comparisons to The Arcade Fire and Neutral Milk Hotel, capture SXSW buzz playing on a bill with Grizzly Bear, sell out tours around the world, sign to Saddle Creek and Paper Bag Records, and score a "Breaking Out" feature in SPIN Magazine, The Rural Alberta Advantage are poised to explode in 2011 with Departing, out March 1st.

Delusions Sign To Tragic Hero Records; Debut Full Length Due Out Early Summer

Burgeoning Raleigh, NC indie Tragic Hero Records continues to expand its roster. The label just announced its latest signing, NJ/PA ambient hardcore metal act Delusions, which will release its Drew Fulk-produced debut full-length in early summer. Look for the band on the road throughout 2011. For the band’s latest tour dates visit:

About Delusions: Amidst most bands in their respective genre these days, melody and harmony seems to be a key element to the attention sustained by any desired audience or wealth of fans. Delusions, despite any premeditated first impression, carry this desired weight with each song they present - no matter how heavy, or how dark. Producer Drew Fulk exemplified this in their highly anticipated debut record for 2011, "The Language Barrier," to be released through Tragic Hero Records. This release packs 10 crushing songs, each supplied with their own unique groove, texture, and low-tuned striations similar to the likes of For The Fallen Dreams, Meshugghah, and Misery SIgnals. There is a also a noticeable sense of comforting ambiance in each song, characterized to the writing styles of Oceana (prior years) and Of Machines. Vocalist Trevor Gildbride maintains a charisma that will allow fans to separate him from any other multitude of competitive vocalists, taking into additional consideration the raw, distinct tonality of his voice that surely leaves a "memorable kick" to back of one's head.
Delusions includes 4 other members, each with a valuable mark and presentation both in the writing process and live performance. Tony Ciaramello and Andrew Lopez on guitar, Christopher Definis on drums, and Brendan Walsh on bass completes the lineup. New Jersey and Pennsylvania are to be credited as their home-town states, and share a beneficial factor on their personalities and motivational attitudes. Delusions are expected to be a tough competitor in the league or Hardcore / Metalcore bands alike, and will likely claim territory to the fields the play in.

Hostage Calm - Tour w/ O Pioneers!!!

Beginning next Tuesday, Connecticut's Hostage Calm will embark on two-week tour of the East Coast and Midwest, as well as a handful of Canadian dates (featuring Toronto pop-punk outfit Junior Battles).
The five piece is playing shows in support of its critically acclaimed Self-Titled full-length, released last Summer by Run For Cover Records.
Joining Hostage Calm on tour will be Houston, TX's indelible O Pioneers!!!, which will be adding to its seemingly endless array of vinyl releases with the upcoming 9-inch split with Andrew Jackson Jihad (No Idea). Also worth noting is three shows with RFC label mates, Tigers Jaw, fresh off a successful UK tour and on the heels of its amazing new LP, Two Worlds.
With an in-depth understanding of Silent Majority, Turning Point and Quicksand, Hostage Calm's well-received 2008 debut, Lens, was a comprehensive lesson in what punk and hardcore should sound like. Jagged-yet-infectious melodies merged with beefy power chords and politically charged battle cries formed amidst uncommon song structures. On the band's Self-Titled follow-up, It’s safe to say that the quintet's knack for composing intelligent, passionate tunes is matched only by that of its musical ambition. While Hostage Calm continues to hint at those Dag Nasty arpeggios and the skipping Descendents-esque beats, these new songs are pushed in unclassifiable directions, cradled by lush layers of jangling acoustic guitars, quick tambourine hits and resonating piano accompaniments. Truly a singular effort, there's a bit of something for every notch in the music-fan spectrum. Still, Hostage Calm never completely strays from the scene responsible for its inception.
The Self-Titled full-length - which has received high praise across the board, not to mention inclusion on a slew of 2010 "Best Of" lists - is available from the band on tour or you can grab one from Run For Cover here. If you'd like to stream the record in it's entirety for a bit of try-before-you-buy action, head on over to Bandcamp.

You know what they say: location, location, location. Dustin Edge has taken inspiration from locales that range from Kentucky, to New York, to Prague, to create his latest EP, Calm. The EP represents a culmination of his travels, and a clear focus in creating a sound that places him amongst the ranks of the most skillful singer/songwriters. After two prior releases, Calm finds Edge turning to a solo acoustic effort, and offers an easily accessible experience for fans of the indie folk scene.

Edge grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, where he played in various punk bands until beginning to incorporate sounds more rooted in the bluegrass spectrum during his college years. He moved to New York in 2008, and the vibrant energy of the city inspired his first solo album, A Forest Through The Trees, under his own moniker. The delightful full-band texture infused elements of pop, indie, and even took a few cues from his experimentation with bluegrass. In 2010, By The Numbers kept the momentum going strong after Edge went overseas to Prague, and transposed his new inspiration into an eclectic, up-tempo collection.
Calm, was recorded in Brooklyn and takes a sharp contrast to his previous works. The sound is often hushed, smooth, and represents the kind of simple happiness that many seek to find amidst the rushed energy of New York. The five songs on Calm showcase a Nick Drake/Bert Jansch-inspired acoustic folk style that carries musical poise and vocal tranquility similar to Joshua Radin or Philip Selway. Edge describes the EP as being “laden with ruminations on the search for contentment among tumultuous times.” “New York City can be a beast,” he says, but the songs come across with utter clarity and composure.

The ACBs - "Boy Like Me"

The ACBs have the ability to seemingly summon huge hooks from the thin air on their latest album, Stona Rosa, which has been on my top ten list since I learned about the guys. These Kansas City natives craft songs that make me think, "they sure don't write songs like this anymore."

Please check out their first single, "Boy Like Me," below and grab a zip of the album.

MP3: The ACBs - "Boy Like Me"

The ACBs are a band from the midwest (Kansas City to be exact) who just love to laugh and make music and sing and laugh some more. Our biggest fans are probably young kids and the elderly which makes playing club shows to apathetic hipsters quite the challenge (cue: drinking). We do it anyway and folks usually end up having a good time. What we lack in style, we make up for in swagger. We rely on intangibles. We enjoy a good josh. We play because we have to. Coach once told us, “All I everything you’ve got” and he got more than he wanted.
Since 2007, more or less, we: released self titled debut to limited fanfare, slowly built up a solid fanbase in the midwest, garnered more fanfare, bought van, played with some bands (Fastball, Flickerstick, Ryan Cabrera), lost van to fire on the way to Norman, OK, played with good bands (Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, The Get Up Kids, The Republic Tigers), lost 2 members to sunny California, released second album, ready to play for whomever will listen.

Little Scream "The Golden Record"

Little Scream's music is - as her moniker suggests — full of contradictions. It is at once both familiar and foreign. The title of Little Scream’s debut full length, The Golden Record, references this very juxtaposition. In 1977, the Voyager Space shuttle launched into space with a time capsule recording of sounds, language and music intended to represent Earth for, as Little Scream says, "some form of sentience that might intercept it in the distant future when we are the distant past."
Nowhere is the contrast more present than in two of The Golden Record’s standout tracks. “Cannons” conjures visions of “receiving signals” and “painting portals through space” over celestial echoes and otherworldly buzzes, “The Heron and the Fox" (MP3) recalls a more terrestrial sound while recounting an intense yearning and lamentation of a truck driver's salad days through a quiet, painful present.
Now living in Montreal, Little Scream, aka Laurel Sprengelmeyer was born in Iowa and raised along the Mississippi River in an "Addams Family meets 700 Club" home where she learned violin and piano as a child. "When my parents divorced, all my mom got out of the deal was a green Chevy pick-up truck. When that truck was dented up in an accident, my mom used the insurance money to bring home a Washburn banjo and the black Fender La Brae I still sometimes play at shows. I spent the following months locked away in our root cellar learning guitar tablature."
Co-produced with Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire, Bell Orchestre), The Golden Record features Little Scream on guitar, vocals, violin, and keyboard. In typical Montreal fashion, it showcases a cast of local talent including Richard Parry, Mike Feuerstack (Snailhouse), Becky Foon (Silver Mt. Zion), Patty McGee (Stars), and Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire, Bell Orchestre). The National’s Aaron Dessner also contributed on “The Heron and the Fox”. It was recorded at City Hall, Montreal and Aaron’s Garage, New York in 2009/2010.
The Golden Record will be released by Outside Music on April 12th, 2011.

Little Scream will be on tour this spring with Julie Doiron, Plants and Animals and Sharon Van Etten and will appear at SXSW at the Secretly Canadian showcase, among others (details are forthcoming).
