Burly Calling Festival 2011

Burly Calling was a joke started by the Saint Alvia Cartel in 2007 to make money for tour support. The original concept was a "tour" across their home town of Burlington from one end of the city to another. This highly successful event took different shapes over the next few years bringing us to the current inception it is now.
Burly Calling has become an internationally known phenomenon in the DIY ( do it yourself) music and art markets. Celebrating the diverse artists of all formats that have spawned from this area making Burlington internationally known.
Burly Calling founder Ben Rispin has been navigating his way through the music industry for close to 20 years. His passion has taken him around the globe allowing him to spread the word about the thriving art scene that is flourishing in Burlington ,Ontario .
The goal of the festival has evolved into trying to bring community and the arts together to celebrate the diversity of the great city.
The past years have been beyond successful often with venues and pubs competing to get added to the roster. The only problem Burly Calling faced in 2010 was not enough room for the massive amounts of traffic that wanted to attend .Everyone agreed that this is a good problem to have. With all the support things are very optimistic for Burly Calling indicating all aspects involved will continue to grow and be better every year.
The goal of the festival is to give concert goers a unique experience by allowing them to see well-known bands in intimate venues. 2011 would seem to be the biggest year, with the biggest bands and the most excitement so far !

8 venues - 2 Days, Dec 16 - 17
Headliners include:

Jersey
The Flatliners
The Reason
Saint Alvia
Bat Sabbath
The Dinner Belles
The Artist Life
Walk Off The Earth
The Creepshow
The Organ Thieves
& many more.

Check out the Burly Calling website for ticket information, updates and the soon to be announced festival schedule @ : http://www.burlycalling.com/

JOHN K. SAMSON TO RELEASE NEW SOLO ALBUM

John K. Samson, singer-songwriter for critically lauded indie rock band The Weakerthans, will release his first full length solo album, Provincial, this January 24th via Epitaph Records. The record contains newly recorded versions of songs from Samson’s previous two acclaimed EPs, “City Route 85” and “Provincial Road 222,” alongside a collection of beautifully evocative new tracks. Provincial is now available for pre-order at the Epitaph Store.

Provincial travels four routes woven into the prairie landscape of Manitoba, the Canadian province where Samson lives. It finds familiar landmarks and forgotten ones; it mines the precise and particular. For a video glimpse of Provincial’s prairie roadmap, go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfqLrWMMPZ4

“Heart of the Continent,” describes the sense of loss and despair that haunts the former site of a Winnipeg landmark, set against a backdrop of lilting country folk. The melodic rocker “When I Write My Master’s Thesis,” details a young academic’s struggle to hold his life together as he tries to complete his research of a forgotten institution in tiny Ninette, Manitoba, while "www.ipetitions.com/petition/rivertonrifle/" is a song in the form of an online petition to honor the valiant hockey player Reggie “The Riverton Rifle” Leach.
They are hymns for the departed and rockers for the living, songs about dying villages, Icelandic longing, snowplows, broken glass, satellites, hockey skates, and staff room romances. In creating these sonic portraits, Samson talked to relatives, friends and strangers; he visited archives, a tuberculosis sanatorium turned RV Park and a forgotten cemetery. The resulting album contains 12 fierce, tuneful, vivid stories united by a deep sense of place.
The Weakerthans were born out of the Winnipeg-punk-scene. The group’s breakthrough album Reconstruction Site and its celebrated follow up Reunion Tour deftly merged a melodic punk with Bob Dylan-Ray Davies lyrical insights, earning a wider fan base and establishing Samson as a songwriter of immense talent. Paste Magazine wrote of Reunion Tour, “If such a prize existed, it would be the leading candidate for this year’s Punk Pulitzer.”

Okkervil River Release 'Golden Opportunities 2' For Free

At the end of the year in 2007, Okkervil River released Golden Opportunities Mixtape, a free EP intended as a gift to fans. Called a “Must Have Download” by Rolling Stone, the songs were recorded on the road throughout Europe and America during extensive touring for their album The Stage Names. This year, the band continues that tradition in the sequel release Golden Opportunities 2, which both hearkens back to the original release and varies the formula.
Like its predecessor, Golden Opportunities 2 is a series of conceptually-related covers, this time by lesser-known musicians’ musicians such as Motown session player Ted Lucas, the 1980’s Australian band the Triffids, and the mysterious L.A. singer-songwriter Jim Sullivan, who vanished in the New Mexico desert in 1975. In contrast to the intricate arrangements and detailed production of this year’s full-length Okkervil release I Am Very Far, which Pitchfork called “a lyrically and musically feisty album” and about which Filter said “…rich, layered arrangements make I Am Very Far both fascinating and memorable,” Golden Opportunities was recorded entirely live to two-track tape in one day at the Austin studio Premium Recording. The resulting EP showcases a band that has developed both a tight responsiveness and a loose-limbed casualness after a year spent on the road. A hazy mystery hangs over these songs, which are evocative on their own but, when collected together, add up to something greater and stranger than the sum of their parts.
As with the first Golden Opportunities, this new release is available for free on the Okkervil River website. It can be downloaded in both MP3 and lossless formats.

Carlo Meriano releases latest album “Sticka Ikebana” on December 4, 2011.

Carlo Meriano wants to tell you a story. It won't have a beginning or an end, and it might be different the next time you hear it, and it might be about temporal paradoxes or about being a truck driver, but it will always be honest. A stranger to music theory, Carlo has been writing songs since childhood as a way to express and make sense of his experiences and emotions, and also because he can't remember the lyrics to other artist's songs.
With influences that include Elliott Smith, Johnny Cash, The Magnetic Fields and the creator of the original Twilight Zone television series, Carlo presents a truly unique sound with lyrics that range from collapse and redemption, happiness and fear to the absurd. These songs, written from 2006 to 2010, were born of out of Carlo's own life, informed by two years of self destruction followed by two years of rebuilding in his life and his music. Musically, this renewal was clear when Carlo released the Toys are Just EP in 2008, featuring songs written and performed chiefly on a ukulele and a toy electronic guitar purchased at Value Village for $4.99. Based on the strength of that EP and Carlo's often frenetic live shows, he toured the East Coast and was invited to open Andrew WK's Halifax show.
Following the success of this tour and shows across Ontario, Carlo started writing in earnest; revisiting the music he'd written both before and after his most destructive period and recorded a full length album with Dave Plowman, featuring support from several Toronto musicians.

On December 4, 2011 at the Painted Lady in Toronto, Carlo will release Sticka Ikebana, a nine track journey through a diverse landscape that is unified by Carlo's soulful vocals and jaunty melodies. Layered with guitar, ukulele, lap steel, violin, banjo and even the glockenspiel, Sticka Ikebana has a strong folk heart with country, rock and pop influences.

Carlo Meriano wants to tell you a story. Are you listening?

Build Us Airplanes - New LP Available from Sell The Heart

Sell The Heart (Santa Rosa, CA) are excited to announce the release of the new album from Build Us Airplanes. At The End Of The Day is the sophomore album from the Bay Area indie rock band.

The album is available digitally as well. You can download At The End of The Day for $6 at Build Us Airplanes' Bandcamp. You can also download via iTunes.
From the dusty roads of Vacaville, CA Build Us Airplanes brings a familiar, yet fresh approach to indie rock. The quartet is made up of hardworking punk/indie kids who decided they wanted a bit more melody to go along with their angst. Since there inception in early 2008 the band has already cranked out several solid releases. With their latest album, At The End of The Day, Build Us Airplanes have found the sweet spot between indie and punk. The band spins melodic indie rock with punk rock swagger leaving the pretension firmly checked at the door. Top notch songwriting and catchy lyrics blend with an edge that has been honed from years of playing together. Residing somewhere between Archers of Loaf, Cursive, Jawbreaker and Hot Water Music, Build Us Airplanes has carved out their own unique niche.

O PIoneers!!! Announce Final Tour (Nov 26 - Dec 07)

Long-running rockers O Pioneers!!! have announced their imminent demise. In a statement issued late last night from his fortified printing compound outside Houston, Pioneers’ fearless leader Eric Solomon expounded on the death of the dream:
O Pioneers!!! was a band that should have ended a long time ago. I started this band in the fall of 2004, and it's slowly changed and migrated into what it is today, based off of the millions of people that have been in this band. I got tired of trying to con people into playing songs that they liked, or may have been a fan of, but ultimately they didn't have a connection with, besides something that was at face value. This was my first band, and I'd like to remember it as such. I'm super excited and proud of everything I've been able to do with this band, and even more excited and honored by the people I've met playing in this band. But I feel that at this time it's better to try and start over, instead of trying to force something that I feel has been over for a little while now. The future of music in my life is really exciting right now, and I couldn't be happier with how OP!!! is ending, and for what projects we’ll be starting next year. Big thanks to a million people, but especially everyone who has been in this band at one point (all 30,000 of you), and all close friends and family (you know who you are).
O Pioneers!!! will celebrate this momentous occasion with a short farewell tour beginning next week. They will be joined on all dates by labelmates and old friends New Bruises, with the tour taking both bands throughout the East Coast for shows alongside Latterman, Iron Chic, Tigers Jaw and many more. Dates are listed below.
In honor of a lifespan rivaled only by their incessant release schedule, O Pioneers!!! have unleashed their complete discography as a digital pay-what-you-want download via Juicebox Recording Co. This discography includes all of the 7”s, EP’s, splits and full-lengths, as well as various demos, live recordings and unreleased songs. The only songs not included are the three songs that are on the Andrew Jackson Jihad split 9” released earlier this year on No Idea Records.

The discography can be found here: http://juiceboxdotcom.com/recordingco/jb042/

Rejectioneers – Release Debut EP For Free Download

Columbia, SC indie band Rejectioneers have digitally released their debut EP, 25, for free download on Bandcamp.

Listen to "When It's Over" (mp3) from 25.

Boasting former members from several prominent SC bands, Rejectioneers offer a mature take on tuneful indie rock. Originally formed in 2007 the band took proper shape in 2009 and spent 2010 practicing and recording. The band emerged to start playing shows again in 2011 and 25 marks Rejectioneers’ highly anticipated debut release. Meticulously recorded in pieces over the course of two years in guitarist Kenny McWilliams’ Archer Avenue studio, 25 blends power pop, 90’s alt rock and indie rock into one polished sound. Rejectioneers’ songs are instantly memorable and affecting. Recalling the beautiful pop simplicity of Nada Surf and The Weakerthans against the rock backbone of Jimmy Eat World and Foo Fighters, Rejectioneers’ impact is nothing short of immediate. With the tasteful crooning of Ben Walker out in front of the band’s refined arrangements, the melodies and emotion shine bright.

Rejectioneers are in the process of writing their debut full-length this Winter. More news to come!

The Minneapolis City Pages upon seeing WOD live simply stated: "The War On Drugs... confidently delivered one of the best shows of the year." Signals Midwest - Pre-Order New LP from Tiny Engines

Latitudes And Longitudes, the sophomore full-length from Cleveland, OH's Signals Midwest, is now available for pre-order from Tiny Engines (CSTVT, Look Mexico, Restorations, Tigers Jaw). The 12" LP will see a December 20, 2011 release date, while the digital version is available via Bandcamp and iTunes now. It's also worth noting that all vinyl pre-orders come with an instant mp3 download for the 10-song album.
The Latitudes And Longitudes vinyl is limited to 500 pressed on three colorways (75 teal / 150 maroon / 275 cream). The first 50 pre-orders will receive a limited-edition poster print with exclusively designed by Jeff Finley. Additionally, all pre-orders will be entered to win a test pressing of the record.
Signals Midwest recently unveiled the video for "The Quiet Persuader" off Latitudes And Longitudes. You can watch the exclusive premier of the video courtesy of Alternative Press. The video was directed/edited by Aaron Freeder.
Rarely do you come across a young band that startles you with such inherent quality. While Cleveland, Ohio’s Signals Midwest might be rooted in the ethos of punk rock the band quickly transcends the tag both musically and lyrically on their sophomore album, Latitudes And Longitudes. Paying tribute to the continual growth of legends like Small Brown Bike and Fairweather while echoing modern bands such as Balance And Composure and The Menzingers, Signals Midwest provide a unique perspective that resides firmly outside the punk-by-the-numbers formula. Call if post-pop/punk if you will.

Listen to "Limnology" from Latitudes And Longitudes

Signals Midwest formed in late 2008 as a trio and issued their first full-length album in 2009. In 2010 the band expanded to a quartet with the addition of a second guitar player. That would be a pivotal move in the band’s collaborative development. Experimenting with and expanding their sound, Signals Midwest quickly outgrew the standard pop/punk pace. With 2011’s Latitudes And Longitudes there is a fleshed out maturity that shines through. Recorded mostly live, the album bristles with the kind of energy and purpose that emanates from a band confidently growing comfortable in their own skin.

Be sure to follow Tiny Engines' Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter pages for more exclusive news over the next few months.

ISLANDS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM

Acclaimed modernist pop band Islands will release their new album A Sleep & A Forgetting this February 14th via Anti-Records. While the record continues the band’s penchant for crafting adventuresome and infectious state of the art pop music, this time band leader Nick Thorburn has infused the songs with a personal introspection that gives the record a new and powerful emotional resonance.
“This album is far more personal than any I’ve made before,” Thorburn explains. “I left New York after the end of a relationship and came to Los Angeles. There was a piano where I was staying and that’s where I wrote these songs. This record deals with loss, with memory and forgetting and with dreaming. I started writing it on Valentines day and its coming out on Valentine’s Day.”
A Sleep & A Forgetting is the anticipated follow up to Islands critically heralded record Vapours, which Black Book described as "infectious and weird....masterful” and Popmatters proclaimed “a damn fine record.” The new album was produced by Thorburn and fellow Islands member Evan Gordon in less than two weeks, the 11 songs recorded live with hardly a single overdub. It’s a stripped down process and beautifully understated sound which only reinforces the confessional content of the lyrics.
The new album offers all the shimmering sonic textures and irresistible melodies that have come to define Islands enduring appeal, but there is a deeply personal cathartic undercurrent to the songs. “The sound is really my interpretation of soul music,” Thorburn offers.
“I mean, I’m a white kid from Canada so it’s gonna be very warped. But that’s where my head was at, that particular way of dealing with themes of pain and heartbreak.”

CARLETON STONE ANNOUNCES NOVEMBER TOUR DATES IN EASTERN/WESTERN CANADA

Following the recent release of his self-titled record with Groundswell Music/Warner, Carleton Stone is taking his infectious pop/rock tracks on the road this November, playing for audiences across six of ten Canadian provinces. Stone will be pairing up with veteran Tom Wilson and The Heartbroken on most of these dates.
Carleton Stone is quickly gaining a reputation for his hook-laden songwriting and his charismatic and soulful live sets. It's no surprise that after getting his music to JUNO award-winning artist Hawksley Workman in 2010 that the two joined forces. Workman produced Stone's self-titled album and co-wrote on the track "Million Dollar Heart". Songs on the album stand out with a perfect blend of pop, rock, and alt-country that supports Stone's impeccable songwriting.
Stone's 2009 debut album, Carleton Stone Drives The Big Wheel, was independently released and garnered an East Coast Music Award nomination (Rock Recording of The Year) plus two nominations from Music Nova Scotia (New Artist/Ground Recording & Pop/Rock Artist/Group Recording.)

Wavelets - Pre-Order Debut LP / Out Digitally Today

Athaletics, the debut full-length from Gainesville, FL's Wavelets is now available for pre-order from Tiny Engines (Tigers Jaw, CSTVT, Look Mexico, Restorations). The 12" LP will see a November 29, 2011 release date, while the digital version is out today via Bandcamp and iTunes. It's also worth noting that all vinyl pre-orders come with an instant mp3 download for the 9-song album.
Pressed on 180 gram vinyl, Athaletics is limited to 500 on three colorways (75 clear / 150 transparent red / 275 black) and includes a hand-screened insert and an mp3 download code. The first 50 pre-orders will receive a limited-edition, hand-screened print with exclusive artwork by Wavelets' drummer, Lee Kraft. Additionally, all pre-orders will be entered to win a test pressing of the record.
Tiny Engines and Wavelets recently teamed up with RCRD LBL and PureGrainAudio.com to give away two new tracks from Athaletics. Download free mp3s for "Cannonball" and "Cam Taylor Is So American Kushball" here and here.
Additionally, Wavelets was recently included on the Topshelf Records 2011 Label Sampler. This compilation features some of the very best of the underground emo / punk scenes, including Pianos Become The Teeth, Touché Amoré, Moving Mountains, Balance And Composure, La Dispute, Grown Ups, Bars Of Gold and much much more ... not to mention most of the Tiny Engines Roster as well. To download "My Dad The Manatee" from Wavelets, plus 67 other amazing songs, go here.
Recorded by Matt Finch and Ryan Williams at Black Bear Studios (Hot Water Music, Chris Wollard, City Of Ships), Athaletics traverses nine tracks of somersaulting, emotionally charged indie rock (let's just call it emo) that initially feels a little out of place in relation to the tuneful, gruff punk that Gainesville and its bearded denizens have become known for. Still, great music transcends scenes, genres and geographical limitations; in that sense Wavelets is thriving with its boundless energy and freewheeling, friends-first attitude ... not to mention the outfit's ability to create music that is both intricately complex and instantly catchy. It's this unique blend of technicality and structural ingenuity that initially grabs our attention, but it's Athaletics comforting nostalgia and sense of fun that really wins us over and begs for repeat spins. Recommended for fans of Algernon Cadwallader, Street Smart Cyclist and Weatherbox.
Since its 2009 inception, Wavelets has self-released a handful of digital EPs and singles, as well as a 7" split with hometown brethren, Senders. To download the band's full discography, go here. Also, if you have an extra minute, do yourself a favor and download the new EP from Dikembe, which features Wavelets front man Steven Gray as well as bassist Ryan Willems.
Finally, don't forget to catch Wavelets at this year's FEST 10 in Gainesville. The band will be playing on Friday (10/28) at Bar 1982 with Grown Ups, Spraynard, Go Rydell, Nightmares For A Week and more. For additional information, go here.

Northcote announces more tour dates in support of Gather No Dust.

Victoria-based singer-songwriter Northcote is pleased to announce more Canadian tour dates in support of his brilliant debut album Gather No Dust. Released earlier this year on Black Box, Gather No Dust has quietly emerged as one of the albums of the year. A full list of dates can be found below, including shows with label-mates The Wooden Sky.
In addition to the tour dates, Northcote has launched a four part documentary series called "Only You Can See Me" on his website. View the first part by clicking here or on the still below. The documentary is a more intimate introduction to Matt Goud, the voice behind Northcote. The footage was captured during a series of shows earlier this year, paired with an extensive interview covering his youth, music, inspiration and his newest album, Gather No Dust. The documentary series will be released one per week for the next few weeks, and are accompanied by a free download of an exclusive track. This week, the free mp3 is an acoustic version of the song "Take The Ride".
A unique voice in Canada’s broad musical aesthetic, Goud is no stranger to movement having years of North American touring under his belt in an influential post-hardcore group all beginning while in high school. Since the groups disbanding in November of 2008, Goud followed a number of different personal and musical paths, which lead to the arrival of his debut solo effort, an EP entitled Borrowed Chords, Tired Eyes (Black Box, 2009). With the new EP, Goud took to the road and continued to build his audience across Canada while gaining experience along the way. Touring took many forms, including solo in a two-door car or riding backbench in the overflowing van of a headlining act.
Gather No Dust was tracked in rural Southern Ontario in November 2010 with producer Dan Weston (Attack in Black, Classified, Shad, City and Colour). While staying committed to a minimal and atmospheric approach to writing and recording, Gather No Dust fittingly ventures into new territory both sonically and lyrically.

The Mighty Fine - U.S. Tour

Beginning today (Friday, October 7th) The Mighty Fine (San Luis Obispo, CA) will embark on a 15-date tour of the U.S. in support of its newest full-length, In Revival.
The band's sophomore effort was released on August 16th by Solidarity Recordings (imadethismistake, The Methadones, Run, Forever) and is available on CD and digital formats. Go here to grab the 12-track CD, download it via iTunes or pick up a copy directly from the band at shows. There is also a 12" vinyl version in the works which will see a late Fall release from Solidarity.
The Mighty Fine will be touring with fellow Californians Heart To Heart, whose newest 7-inch, Deathproof, was released today by Anchor Eighty Four. Detailed tour info is below.
Produced by Nolan Perry, mastered by Justin Perkins (Screeching Weasel, The Riverdales, Direct Hit!) and featuring artwork from Dave Watt, In Revival is the follow-up to The Mighty Fine's 2010 self-released full-length, Bad Timing For Everything. On its latest stellar effort, the California trio extolls the most positive virtues of contemporaries such as The Menzingers and Against Me! - driving, punchy rhythms, soaring choruses and dynamic song structures - while still carving out a unique space for itself within the crowded punk universe. Played with passion and a fiery conviction, but also executed with precision and carefully considered ideas, In Revival bares the mark of a band ready for bigger and better things.

In Revival is currently streaming in its entirety at Punknews.org. The listen to the full-album, go here. Additionally, you can download free mp3s for the songs "To Indiana" and "Paper Trails."

Finally, head on over to Dying Scene and vote for The Mighty Fine in the site's Cover Art of the Month Battle. Created by the previously mentioned Dave Watt, In Revival is being pitted against the likes of The Copyrights and fellow Beartrap PR roster mates, Banquets.

Adaline ready to celebrate the release of Modern Romantics with shows in Toronto and Vancouver.

Adaline is excited to announce two release shows in Toronto and Vancouver in support of her stellar second album Modern Romantics (full details below). The album will be available from November 1st and was produced by Hawksley Workman with additional production from Marten Tromm, and Tino Zolfo. Watch a short making-of documentary on her new website here or by clicking the still below. Get a sneak-peek of Modern Romantics by downloading an MP3 for "Wasted Time" here.
Modern Romantics is invested with the depth and imagination you only ever get from high-end, ultra-talented music nerds, whether it’s in the meticulously layered percussion and noise – timpani included - of the Metric-gone-industrial “Wasted Time”, or the tonal shifts that bring such deliberate force to Adaline’s cathedral-sized ballad, “Say Goodbye (I Won’t Even)”. Adaline achieves near Judy Garland levels of melodrama on “That’s What You Do Best”, the stately electro-torch song that opens Modern Romantics. But she doesn’t get there without boxing your ears with wiggy sax (from Shuffle Demon Richard Underhill) and unhinged guitar solos (by Workman) on the way, the latter sounding like it was recorded in a reinforced missile silo. There’s a lot of tastefully rendered sonic action on the way to that quivering, love-burnt climax.

Addressing the Get Up Kids breaking up rumours... I'm late, but better than never?

"The Get Up Kids are not breaking up after this European tour, as has been erroneously announced in some areas of the press. What was said was that this could be the last set of tour dates for a spell, especially in Europe, as members are splitting off to work on some other projects for a while. That is—Matt Pryor has a new solo album, May Day (which was funded with the help of a Kickstarter campaign) that is due in January. Rob Pope is likely working on a new Spoon album (Britt Daniel has spent the year writing new songs for the next release). James Dewees continues to play in My Chemical Romance. Ryan Pope is spending some time in Europe. Jim Suptic is being a dad for the second time.

It is not even a 'hiatus' which always seems to mean something much more final. At this point, there are no Get Up Kids dates booked beyond the current set of shows in Europe, but that doesn't mean we won't be looking to do more live touring in the future. We've had a great time making these new songs, and playing them live, and have enjoyed being a band together again, so the Get Up Kids will be continuing on in 2012 and beyond. We started working on this current album, There Are Rules, over two years ago, and have toured the world supporting the release, for what will be the better part of 10 months (and in fact had played a lot in 2010 prior to the album release, too)—we have been working hard on being the Get Up Kids again. So taking some time to work on some other projects seems well deserved."

ARTERIES STREAM “DEAD SEA” AND PREPARE FOR NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

With THE ARTERIES preparing to invade North America on tour with The Flatliners and Dead To Me, the UK punk group has unveiled a stream of its recent critically acclaimed full-length, Dead Sea. Stream the record here.
Dead Sea came out in October 2010 in the UK and a vinyl pressing became available on Paper + Plastick in early 2011. To celebrate the stream, Paper + Plastick Records is putting the record up for sale in vinyl format for a short time. Also, Punknews.org has a contest to win a copy of each of the three vinyl variations for free here.
Dead Sea was subject to favorable reviews from critics, with Alter The Press calling them “a fucking great punk rock band” in their 5-Star review. “Whether you got into punk rock through Punk-O-Rama or through Fall Out Boy you will find something to cherish on Dead Sea,” the review reads. “Long may The Arteries continue doing this themselves.” Meanwhile, in their 4.5-star review, Punktastic called Dead Sea “a ballsy record with attitude,” adding, “The Arteries have a confidence and an ability to just write great songs and great choruses that will stick in your head for a long, long time afterwards.”
While their upcoming two and a half-week weave through North America won’t the band’s first U.S. tour, it might be their most anticipated. Supporting Dead Sea, the band will tour its way from New York to The Fest 10 in Gainesville, Fla. It will the tour its way back up to Washington, D.C., before heading back home.

Challenges - Debut LP Available from Pre-Order from Say-10

We Ruined The Neighborhood, the debut full-length from Challenges (Millbury, MA) is now available for Pre-order from Say-10 (The Riot Before, GDP, Dirty Tactics). The album will see an official street date of October 11th on CD and LP format, with the latter being limited to 300 on green vinyl. These 11 stellar pop-punk gems are also available digitally via iTunes and Bandcamp, where you can also stream the record in its entirety.
To celebrate the upcoming release, Challenges and Say-10 are giving away ultra-rare vinyl test pressings of Neighborhood to two lucky pre-order customers. For more information, go here.
Recorded by Ian Van Opijnen (Born Without Bones, Energy, The Hotel Year) and originally self-released by the band in late 2010, We Ruined The Neighborhood is busting at the seams with passion, buoyant enthusiasm and a truckload of sing-along hooks. There's no doubt that Challenges is a young band with energy to spare. In that respect, the quintet's debut follows in the footsteps of contemporaries such as The Wonder Years, Four Year Strong and fellow Bay Staters, Transit. However, Neighborhood is able to harness that electricity and wrap it around engaging song structures and a surprisingly mature grasp of composition, bringing to mind pop-punk forefathers like Blink 182 and New Found Glory.
To download a free mp3 for the song "Drop The 'R'" go here. Additionally, Challenges recently debuted a video for "I Was Always Good At Lying," which you can view here.

In related news, Say-10 and Challenges will be teaming up again for a split 7" with the UK's Who's Driving? Bears Driving!. The record will be released on November 22, 2011. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks.

Tiny Engines!

Tiny Engines (Tigers Jaw, CSTVT, Look Mexico, Restorations) is excited to welcome Cleveland, OH's Signals Midwest to its growing roster. The label will release the band's sophomore full-length, Latitudes And Longitudes, on 12" vinyl in November.
Pre-orders for the Latitudes And Longitudes vinyl will begin late October/early November with an official release date set for late November. The album is available digitally now. For a limited time you can download Latitudes And Longitudes for $6 at the Tiny Engines' Bandcamp. You can also download via iTunes.

Listen to "Limnology" from Latitudes And Longitudes

Rarely do you come across a young band that startles you with such inherent quality. While Cleveland, Ohio’s Signals Midwest might be rooted in the ethos of punk rock the band quickly transcends the tag both musically and lyrically on their sophomore album, Latitudes And Longitudes. Paying tribute to the continual growth of legends like Small Brown Bike and Fairweather while echoing modern bands such as Balance And Composure and The Menzingers, Signals Midwest provide a unique perspective that resides firmly outside the punk-by-the-numbers formula.
Check out a live video of the album opener, "In Tensions". The song was the first performance in the "Live from Bad Racket" series sponsored by Ohio Authority.
Also, the band recently shot a video for "The Quiet Persuader" which will premeire on Punknews.org in October.
Signals Midwest has a couple of dates in the Cleveland area coming up supporting some amazing bands.

UPCOMING SHOWS

OCT 09 - Cleveland Heights, OH @ The Grog Shop w/ Strike Anywhere, The Menzingers, Dead To Me and The Holy Mess

Montreal's Young Galaxy release sequel to wildly successful video for 'We Have Everything'

Montreal art-rock outfit Young Galaxy are excited to release the sequel to the outstanding video for 'We Have Everything' which recently broke YouTube's 100,000 views barrier. The new video for 'Peripheral Visionaries' was also directed by Sinbad Richardson, a Montreal based visual artist working as an animator, designer and video director. Watch the video by clicking the still below. Young Galaxy are also excited to announce that they will be supporting label-mates Austra on their upcoming tour of Canada (full list of dates below).
In 'Peripheral Visionairies', Jennifer finds herself given a second chance to live a fulfilling life. A producer discovers her one night singing in a karaoke bar and gives her the glamorous life she had previously only dreamed of. In the end, she makes the same mistakes as in her previous less than privileged life, having learned nothing at all despite her creator's efforts. Will she ever learn?
"The band asked me to create a second animated music video and I suggested making a sequel to 'We Have Everything' off the same album," says Sinbad Richardson. "'Peripheral Visionaries' picks up where we left off, our main character is stranded on the side of the highway, her bus having broken down. This narrative interprets 'Peripheral Visionaries' as a confession to the attraction of the unholy and a belonging to an ambiguous (nonetheless determined) rebellion against virtue. Our main character was to give in to her superficial ambitions but not without a cost. The line 'We a sea, tears from the eyes of god' repeated over and over, is taken as a foregone conclusion."
Young Galaxy's Shapeshifting was recently included on the Polaris Music Prize long list becoming the only act in the prize's history to be included on the list in consecutive years. Upon the release of Shapeshifting, Young Galaxy was named CBC Radio 3, Aux TV and Exclaim Magazine's X3 Artist of the Month for February.

Nomeansno On Tour In Canada !

Hot on the heals of the next installment, "Tour EP 2", at a record time, 45 rpms to be exact, Nomeansno will once again venture across this vast, annoyingly vast, country of ours, Canada. The EP, of course, already being sold out, Both Copies!!, Nomeansno keeps true to a long and honoured tradition of ineptitude where nothing is ever available. We will, however, have in tow "Tour EP 1"!... which is somewhat old, actually entirely "Old". No worries though, a night of ear-splitting ribald and anachrony is in store. Featuring the likes of John Wright, Rob Wright, and that "Old" devil himself, Blacula.
With 30 years of nonsense in the pocket, not to mention the bank, Nomeansno expects yet another unmitigated success, at least that is the fantasy we'll labour under for a while.

Nomeansno coming to a fine establishment near you !

Matthew Barber set for Ontario and Quebec live dates in November.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Matthew Barber will be hitting the road for a short tour of Ontario and Quebec in support of his recently released self-titled album. The nine-date trek will start on November 10th in Peterborough and will see Matthew performing with a full band (full list of dates below). Outside Music released Matthew Barber on June 7th. The album sees the Toronto-based musician return to his roots by playing all of the instruments as well as handling the the recording and mixing duties. Download the latest single "Man In A Movie" here.
Matthew Barber’s passion for the throwback sounds of the late 60’s and early 70’s is again clearly evident on Matthew Barber, which was captured entirely on an analog 8-track machine. “I read Keith Richards’ autobiography as I was beginning the recording process and I was excited by his statement that 8-track was his preferred format for recording,” says Barber. “It forces you to make choices as you go along and keep the arrangements lean, which suited the sort of record I wanted to make. I also got an iPhone around that time and the only album I had on it for months was Beggar’s Banquet, which became a reference point sonically.”
Astute listeners will surely notice nods to 20th century masters like The Beatles, The Stones, Dylan, The Band and Paul Simon – but the voice at the heart of each song – both as songwriter and singer – is singularly Matthew Barber. “The heart of the record is about being in a long-term relationship, trying to make sense of all that goes along with your life becoming more deeply entwined with that of another person and how that influences both your outlook on the world and your understanding of yourself.”
Louise Burns applies her influences across the board on her debut Mellow Drama, which was recently included on the Polaris Music Prize Long List. It's an album that weds ringing clarity to emotional truth over 11 originals and one gorgeously wrought cover of Leonard Cohen's "Gypsy's Wife". Even in the circling, endlessly recursive swirl of the Mazzy Star-esque “Clean” or the minatory shoe-gazey ballad “Ocean Grey”, Burns and her production cohorts Dave Ogilvie and Kevin James Maher keep it trim.
