Forgive me for blogging...

I have a busy week ahead of me with shows and packing and shit. I leave for mother fucking VANCOUVER next Monday to visit my besty, Miss Becky (from the wicked band The Does…, and I could NOT be more excited.
I hope to see a bunch of bands while I’m down there so I can write from the perspective of another happenin’ city other than Toronto… so bear with me for a week of no updates… I’ll make it up to you when I’m back I promise…

Not to mention this week will be packed full of reviews to hold you over until then anyway!

Tuesday night = THE AVETT BROTHERS @ Phoenix, and I am already crapping my pants for it.

Wednesday night = Another country’ish band, this one local called The Order of Good Cheer playing at the Piston with Still Life Still… and on top of that you get a chance to win a bag of MEAT if you go. Holla!

Friday night = Members of The Stiff Wires debut their new lineup as All the Trendy Kids at the Velvet Underground…. Straight up punk rock this time boys! STOKED!

Also working on reviewing local band Stuck On Planet Earth (SOPE) and the stream of Good Old War’s new album which is found on their myspace.

My obsessions lately are as follows:
Doc Walker’s “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” which seemed to follow me around Grafton when I visited my parents this past weekend.
A Loss For Word’s Motown Classics album is still constantly spinning on my Ipod each day at work.
INTO IT. OVER IT. (the Band of the Week) are my newest found love… they make me happier than chocolate on bacon and a chaser of tequila.

Annnnd my favourite song of the moment is thus:

Another thing? Chixdiggit! Friggin’ rule. Still. <3.

I’m Sarah. and I can’t wait for VANCOUVER!!!

The Order Of Good Cheer @ The Piston in Toronto ALL MONTH LONG! W/ Special Guests...

See you there!

Swedish post-hardcore/indie band DISCO ENSEMBLE returns with their fourth studio full length album The Island of Disco Ensemble set to hit stores on June 1st.
After having three previous albums that saw commercial success (Viper Ethics in 2003, First Aid Kit in 2005 and Magic Recoveries in 2008), Miikka Koivisto (Vocals), Jussi Ylikoski (Guitar), Mikko Hakila (Drums), and Lasse Lindfors (Bass) created a fourth album that promises to be there most adventurous.
Recorded in a smorgasbord of different studios in the bands native Finland, Disco Ensemble spent time in Petrax studios in Hollola, Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki and Fried studios in Helsinki. The man behind mixing board of the bands fourth and most mature work is producer/songwriter/radio-journalist Lasse Kurki.
Vocalist Miikka Koivisto on the new album, "The Island of Disco Ensemble couldn't have been born in any other time in history than now. The Island of Disco Ensemble is more consistent and accessible but at the same time more uncompromising and unique than our previous records."
Drummer Mikko Hakila adds: "This album is a natural follow-up to our previous albums. If Viper Ethics was first-album-excitement, First Aid Kit was more mature and Magic Recoveries was stretching the band's limits, then this one is a combination of all of that." The album will be available as a CD, download and vinyl, and a limited edition book & CD package. Disco Ensemble is in the midst of a European tour and just released the first single from the new album, titled "White Flag for Peace." Check it out now.

Psychostick plan to hit the road in June and July with one of their favorite underground bands, Look What I Did (tour dates to be announced soon). The six-week run has been titled "The Pay Off the Van Tour.” “We've been making payments on the chariot for what seems like forever," says Psychostick vocalist Rob Kersey. "Our goal is to pay off the final few thousand this summer and relieve some of the financial strain on our bank account. It's a noble cause."

Psychostick is currently in the midst of the Parental Advisory Tour with Nashville Pussy and Green Jelly (see remaining tour dates below). “Touring with Green Jelly and Nashville Pussy has been very educational and enlightening,” says Kersey. “We’ve always been a DIY, self-touring band, but now we're seeing how touring with professionals actually works. Bill Manspeaker from Green Jelly has been especially influential.”

Psychostick helped Manspeaker celebrate his birthday in Austin, TX, with proper chaos on May 1st. The band, along with the help of fans and Nashville Pussy guitarist Ruyter Suys, pummeled him with 60 rolls of toilet paper and 15 canisters of silly string. Manspeaker later thanked the band for a memorable evening. Fan footage of the event:

A Message and Contest from He Is We...

We know, we knowww...this album is taking us FOR-EV-ER! We're literally like one song away from being finished; we want as many new songs as we can possibly give you. It's coming together so well and it really embodies everything Trevor and I have been through these past few months. I think you guys will be shocked...for real.
So anyway...about this contest: Basically, we are revolving this one around our single "Happily Ever After". We all have one...I know mine is a house by a lake, my own bulldog and all my favorite music to listen to. What's yours??
We want YOU to draw us a picture of your Happily Ever After and send it to us here (! Can't (or don't want to) draw? No problem! Send us a photo or picture you found online...anything that truly displays your Happily Ever After is perfect!
We will post them all on our Myspace page...and whoever gets the most comments (or really inspires us) will win!
Win what you ask!?!
Oh dude, this is the best: The winners get to come hang out with Trevor and I in studio for an afternoon, listen to the entire album and get to sing the choral part of Happily Ever After with us! You guys are literally such a huge part of how we made this record that we thought..why not actually be on the record!?
So start drawing, googling or whatever you need to do! We're so excited to see the have nooo ideeaaa!

Deadline: June 15th (the start of our first ever national toourr!!)

Eligibility: We will be picking 2 winners who are within driving distance of SEATTLE and 1 winner who is not (whoever wins that one will be flown out for the day!).
*If you currently live outside the US and win the contest, you will still be able to hear the album when the other winners do!(But not be flown out- we can't afford those tickets! :(

Rules: Ummm...I guess there are none. But all we ask is that you twitter your "Happily Ever After" by trending #happilyeverafter. Do this after you send us your submission! So for example: "A house on the lake, a bulldog and all my favorite music :) #happilyeverafter" is what I posted!

Have fun and good luck!!!
-Rachel and Trevor (He Is We)

Join a bevy of international burlesque superstars as they take the stage with the living legends of bump ‘n’ grind, world-class variety acts and musical artists
Celebrating its 20th Anniversary, the annual Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend will take place Thursday, June 3 through Sunday, June 6 at The Plaza Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas. Recognized as the world’s top showcase for international burlesque entertainers and enthusiasts, the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend attracts outstanding artists, both exotic and mainstream. Top talent scheduled to appear include: Miss Exotic World 2009 Kalani Kokonuts, Miss Exotic World 2008 Angie Pontani (“NYC burlesque’s reigning star”—New York Post); Immodesty Blaize (Miss Exotic World 2007, star of British stage and TV), Whitney Biennial artist Julie Atlas Muz (Miss Exotic World 2006, Law and Order), Michelle L’amour (Miss Exotic World 2006, America’s Got Talent); Dirty Martini (Miss Exotic World 2004), Kitten DeVille (Miss Exotic World 2002, Auto Focus); along with more than 100 of the world’s top neo-burlesque acts.
“Burlesque has truly become a worldwide phenomenon, and the performers that make it to our show are the sexiest, most talented entertainers on the planet, it’s the only event of its kind, featuring both today’s brightest new stars and the living legends of yester-year.” said Burlesque Hall of Fame representative, Luke Littell.
The Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend also includes a Striptease Reunion, now in its 53rd year, at which newer performers can learn tricks of the trade from surviving superstars of the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s. "The living legends love to be there with all the wonderful girls who come from all over the world to celebrate an American tradition,” said Burlesque Hall of Fame curator Dixie Evans, herself a retired dancer (dubbed "The Marilyn Monroe of Burlesque" by legendary promoter Harold Minsky). “Burlesque is much more than striptease, it combines the whole live experience of dancers, comedians and music.”
Among the many activities slated over the weekend are Friday’s “Titans of Tease” Burlesque Reunion Showcase and Saturday night’s main event, the 20th Annual Burlesque Competition. Called the “Striptease Olympics” by the London Daily Mirror, it is the most prestigious competitive burlesque event in the world; drawing bump ‘n’ grind’s best of the best, year after year, from Tokyo to Toronto. Titles up for the taking include: “Best Debut,” “Best Group,” “Best Boylesque,” “Best Variety Act,” and of course 2010’s “Reigning Queen of Burlesque.”
But wait, there’s more! The weekend is also full of fabulous music, including sets by the world’s hottest Go-Go, Garage, Rockabilly, Lounge and Exotica DJs and a live performance by the amazing Austin, Texas band, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. Additional events include The Grand Re-Opening of the Burlesque Hall of Fame Museum on Fremont Street; a weekend-long Burlesque Bazaar featuring contemporary and vintage burlesque/pinup-inspired wares; the 5th Annual Pinup Safari and Cheesecake Camera Club; Keep A Breast burlesque cast sale; Pinup Pool Party hosted by Sabina Kelley (Sunday); the inaugural Hall of Fame Car Show (Sunday); Texas Tease ‘Em Poker Tournament; Burlesque Hall of Fame Finishing School Master Classes and an all-star Dr. Sketchy’s live drawing event.

20-year old Oklahoma City singer-songwriter Cady Groves is on the fast track to living out her dreams. Influenced by artists she likes to say “drip with truth,” Cady describes her music as: “If Miranda Lambert, Paramore, Dixie Chicks, and Taylor Swift all had a less talented baby - that would be me.” Raised on country music and “whatever was on the radio,” Cady admits her favorite record growing up was Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill although now she listens to musicians like Joanna Newsom, William Fitzsimmons, and Glen Hansard.
Her songs on the recently released The Life of a Pirate EP helped her overcome a bout with depression and her message, if any, is you are not alone. As Cady explains,
“Writing has always been a constant escape for me. A lot of horrible things have happened in my life, and without the ability to write my feelings down and communicate them with a melody; they essentially would have blown up inside of me, for all I know. I've made a lot of mistakes, and have experienced a lot of hurt. But the one thing I feel like you can do with pain, is make it your art. If you can turn it into something you can sing along to, the healing will come through that. To imagine one of my songs could change or help someone, or make them feel like someone understands them, makes this all just that much more amazing. It's not about me being a role model, and never will be. I'm part of the crowd. I just want to speak for the whole. We're in this together.”
Having already toured with the likes of Never Shout Never, The Ready Set and Carter Hulsey, Cady is eager to head out on the road as part of this summer’s Bamboozle Roadshow ( where she will be playing alongside
All Time Low, Boys Like Girls, LMFAO, Third Eye Blind, Hanson and many more.

Canadian producer’s new release showcases wealth of talent and range

Respect your elders. Some feel that statement is something of a cliché, but not Factor. The Canadian producer extraordinaire is poised to breakthrough on May 18th with Lawson Graham, his latest release on Fake Four Inc. But as determined as Factor might be, he’s not doing so without paying tribute to those who provided a solid foundation to his talent. Lawson Graham, a sharp collection of melodic hip-hop that infuses elements of psychedelics, driving guitars and playful, tongue-in-cheek poetry is an ode to Factor’s grandfather whose photo even graces the cover of the record.
When you hear each of the 18 tracks on Lawson Graham, from the spacey, live piano-based title track to the sleek, guitar-heavy groove of ‘Battle Scars,’ (featuring Def3) you can’t help but imagine that Factor’s grandfather would be proud of his grandson’s musical progression and accomplishments.
“Factor may be one of the hardest working men in Canadian music – and between touring and recording, he’s making some serious connections in the hip hop world and beyond.” - Planet S Magazine
Rare is a producer that can encompass so many varying sounds and approaches in one record as Factor does. With the help of a stellar and well-rounded cast of fellow Fake Four labelmates, Lawson Graham reaches great heights with ease. ‘Missed The Train’ (feat. Gregory Pepper) is a relaxed, classic blend of subtle beats and Shins-influenced indie folk. It’s a sure-fire contender for musical mash-up of the year, but isn’t alone as far as intriguing mixes are concerned. ‘More Than Love’ (feat. Kirby) features a joyous, upbeat rhythm with a particularly hopeful chorus that could have been a happier Eminem track or a coffee-house guitarist possessed.
Based in Saskatoon, Factor has been crafting top notch hip hop beats over the last 10 years for a who’s who list of hip hop artists including Awol One, Myka 9, Busdriver, Aesop Rock, and Xzibit. With the massive blend of influences and styles that are showcased on Lawson Graham, it’s only a matter of time before more people realize what a genuine talent Factor possesses as a producer and as a force in hip-hop and indie rock alike. He’ll be taking Lawson Graham on the road from July 8th to 25th with a release party June 19th in Saskatoon at Amigos with special secret guests.

Australia’s masters of metal-core Parkway Drive are set to cement their reputation as one of the most dominant exponents of heavy hardcore on the planet with their spellbinding third album, Deep Blue, which is ready for release on June 29 via Epitaph Records. Check out the album’s trailer which features new music from Deep Blue here:
The hotly anticipated follow-up to 2007’s Horizons, Deep Blue raises the bar in every conceivable way. While maintaining the band’s uncompromising metallic-hardcore style at its core, it pushes into exciting new realms, drawing from a wider scope of influence, incorporating everything from anthemic pop-punk to bloodcurdling death metal.
With improved musical abilities and a thoroughly inspired approach to songwriting, Parkway Drive has tied the music and lyrics together into one all-encompassing concept.
“It’s basically about the search for truth in a world that seems to be devoid of that,” says vocalist and lyricist Winston McCall, explaining the narrative running through Deep Blue. “The story is told through the eyes of a man who wakes up and realizes that his life is a lie and nothing he believes in is real. So he tries to find the truth within himself and his journey takes him to the bottom of the ocean and back again.”
Having recorded their first two albums with Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage, Deep Blue was tracked and mixed in Los Angeles, CA by Joe Barresi (Queens Of The Stone Age, Bad Religion, Tool), and mastered by legendary mastering engineer Brian Gardner.
Crisp, unprocessed and impossibly heavy, the production on Deep Blue brings out every nuance of Parkway Drive‘s freshly re-focused sound.
“It’s definitely the Parkway record I’m most proud of,” claims Winston. “We felt like were in the deep-end recording with someone new, so to have it come out exactly how we wanted it, and pretty much exceed our expectations, is a big ask, but that’s exactly what Joe did for us.”
With 13 tracks in all, standouts include “Sleepwalker,” “Deliver Me” and “Unrest.” Bad Religion guitarist and Epitaph Records owner Brett Gurewitz makes a guest vocal appearance on “Home is for the Heartless,” which brings epic punk rock choruses and crazed metallic finger-tapping guitar work into the established Parkway paradigm.
“We figure that song is going to be the most polarizing thing we’ve ever written,” Winston says. “People are either going to like it or they are going to hate it. I think it worked. That’s one of my favorite songs on the record!”
Already one of the most anticipated heavy releases of the year, Deep Blue represents an exciting new chapter in the story of Australia’s most successful hardcore band.

The Ready Set Announces Details for Debut Album

The band, led by Jordan Witzigreuter, recently released their first single from the album, "Love Like Woe," which you can find here. They have also been releasing a webisode series in anticipation for the album, entitled "The Ready SETisodes," featuring Decaydance mastermind Pete Wentz.

For all my dead homies... A Tribute to DJ Nonchalante on the almost one year since...

This weekend it will be a full year since DJ Nonchalante (aka Devon, a very close friend of mine) passed away, and it's getting me kind of down today (despite the rockin' punk weekend ahead..) so I just want to give a shout out to him:
I'm thinking about you, always... I miss you lots... and I will never forget you.

Love you forever.

(my previous post was far too depressing, I hope this is less of a Debbie Downer)

This is going to be an EPIC weekend.
For those of you who listen to punk and live in Toronto I'm just going to go ahead and assume that I'll see you tonight at the Screeching Weasel/Roman Line show at the Phoenix... and if you can't make it tonight you definitely have to be there for the Riverdales show at Mod Club tomorrow night.

There's also some sort of Pop Punk Baseball Trip happening tomorrow afternoon with various members of the punk community in Toronto, which just tops off this amazing weekend in my books.

(Punk) Beats. Baseball. Booze.
Is there anything else worthwhile in life?

(Disclaimer: I'm not exactly planning on reviewing either show because I paid for my tickets and plan on getting right smashed for them and not criticizing all aspects of these band's performances... however, I may end up writing something... just drunken ramblings about how fucking good they were probably.)

Social Distortion signs to Epitaph Records!

Epitaph Records is proud to welcome Southern California's iconic rock 'n' roll group Social Distortion to the label with plans to release their first studio album since 2004 in Fall 2010. The signing pairs one of rock 'n' roll's most renowned bands with one of the most respected independent labels for what could be the greatest match in decades.
"We feel that Epitaph has a natural understanding of Social Distortion; both the history of the band and the direction we want to go," says frontman Mike Ness.
"Combine that with their successful track record and it felt like a good next step for us. We've always been open to new ideas and pushing the envelope, but we have also been very conscientious about the decisions we've made. We considered a lot of options, but in the end, Epitaph feels like the right home for us. We're looking forward to taking this step forward, opening some new doors with this upcoming album and this next chapter of Social Distortion."
"My relationship with Mike goes way back to the beginnings of our careers in the LA music scene," adds Epitaph owner and president Brett Gurewitz. "Through the years Social Distortion have been a matchless voice in American rock and roll and I couldn't be more thrilled to play a part in the next chapter for this great band." In March the band entered a Burbank studio to record their yet to be titled seventh studio album, produced by Mike Ness, which is slated for release this fall.
"We went back to tape, old compressors and old microphones," Ness recently told "We're just really trying to fight modern technology as much as possible."
"The record reminds me very much of Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell (the band's 1992 release), but also I'm bringing elements of early New York '70s punk," said Ness.
Social Distortion also recently announced a U.S. summer tour with Dan Sartain and The Action Design. The tour kicks off July 27 in Poughkeepsie, NY and makes seven stops in the Northeast before the band heads to Chicago for an August 7 main stage performance at this year's Lollapalooza. Dates with Dan Sartain and The Action Design resume in Green Bay, Wisconsin on August 8. A complete list of tour dates follows.

Formed in Fullerton, CA in 1979, Social Distortion have spent the last three decades performing their signature style of roots driven rock 'n' roll and hard luck stories for fans worldwide while recording six classic, critically heralded albums including Mommy's Little Monster, Prison Bound, Social Distortion, Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell, White Light, White Heat, White Trash and Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll.

Where's the Canadian dates, huh?

Thrice Tour Update... (and I thought I had bad luck)

Since the situation with Dustin's Dad arose and we had to cancel the remainder of our tour, there have been many questions regarding the status of our summer headline tour. Today we got word from Dustin that he's good to go, and as a result, we will be continuing with our plans to do that tour in it's entirety. It has been an indescribably difficult seven months for all of us. In September, my and Ed's Dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in his throat and tongue and has since undergone seven weeks of chemo and radiation, and a major surgery three weeks ago to remove the remaining tumors. No more than two weeks after my Dad's diagnosis in September, Teppei's Mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, and passed away in January. And most recently, Dustin's Dad's diagnosis and surgery last week. It's just been relentless.

So with that said, we'll see you guys this Summer. Tour dates and tickets are available here, with more dates being announced soon. Keep sending positive thoughts and/or prayers in the the direction of Mr. Kensrue and my Pops, and hold fast hope. - POSTED ON THRICE'S WEBSITE/PUNK NEWS)

Danger Radio Signs with Doghouse Records

The Everett, WA band released their debut full-length, Used and Abused, in 2008 on Photo Finish Records, and Doghouse is excited to bring the follow-up this summer. Further details on this summer's full length release to be announced soon.

Trevor Campbell CD Release @ Rivoli TONIGHT!

Seriously come check this guy out if you're from Toronto. I can't tell you enough how amazing of a songwriter he is, and although I'll be reviewing the show I just can't help but write about him now as well.

I used to have this huge obsession with Jason Mraz circa 2002 and earlier, and nothing has really compared to his writing style since then... until I heard Trevor Campbell.

Here's what his myspace says about him:
"Born in Southern Ontario, Trevor Campbell is a combination of his mother and father (charisma and tenacity), the attributes of the year of the pig (perfectionism and gluttony) and the sign of sagittarius (humour and blind, hopeless optimism). He has recorded three self-produced albums, and has performed across North America. He doesn’t have a favorite color, but for a very long time, it was Crayola’s Jungle Green (64), and for a brief period in his primary years, Periwinkle (92). He likes to cook vegan food, do the crossword, and dance to live music, among other things. Find out more at" -

Here's my favourite Jason Mraz song below, just fcr kicks!

After Midnight Project will be hitting the road this week with Chevelle for a week-long Texas tour beginning May 7 in San Antonio wrapping up May 14 in Mission, TX.
Supporting its debut Universal/Motown release, Lets Build Something To Break, the L.A. band will be on the entire Vans Warped Tour this summer.
Heralded as "One of the most seasoned bands I ever worked with," by legendary producer and Goldfinger frontman John Feldman, the group’s debut displays singer Jason Evigan's uncanny ability to pen huge rock anthems blended with melodies that make the songs appealing to even the most hardened rock fan.
“Scream for You” is a song that Jason originally penned for his friends Papa Roach but decided to hold for AMP. The ballad "Gone Too Long" illustrates the rigors of being on the road and was recorded in the early morning hours on a beach in San Simeon. "Take Me Home" has been a crowd favorite for hardcore AMP fans and became the easy selection for the album’s first single.

Thrice Tour Cancelled.

Well, that makes the decision easy of whether to go the day I get back from vacation in BC to go see Thrice, which I probably would have and can't afford now that TIM BARRY is playing soon after.
But still, this is sad. Actually really sad... My condolences to them right now.
"I want to say how sorry I am to each of you who have to miss seeing Thrice in concert on account of my health issues. I have been diagnosed with a large brain tumor and things at this point are very unsure and serious. I will be having surgery in the next few days. Both Dustin and his brother Chase were out on tour and returned home for some precious family time. I am blessed to have the most unbelievable family to support and love me through this. Through the years I have met many amazing Thrice fans who are the most wonderful people, as a matter of fact as I was having my CT scan and the technician asked if I was Dustin Kensrue’s dad, and I proudly said Yes!!!! I love all of the guys in this awesome band and am sorry for the fact this is affecting them too. This has been a tough year on all of the guys in Thrice with family heartache, we all thank you for your prayers and good wishes!"
- Doug Kensrue.(

That's Dustin's dad, so clearly nobody can blame him for cancelling.
